Burn with Kearns: Back to life, back to reality – Kevin Kearns

Coming back from vacation is always challenging for anyone. Plus, if you have slid off your workout wagon and healthy eating plan it can be frustrating.  Every summer I take some time off. About 3 years ago I decided to add another week. Normally I would take 1 week off, now I take 2. I find it is necessary given the pace I and everyone else works at these days. It takes you about a week just to unwind. Unfortunately, the more time you take off from work, the more time you may take off from your workouts as well.

This year I endeavored to make it even easier to work out while on vacation as well as I made a commitment to monitor my eating better. I’m a big fan of the “NutriBullet” blender. I made up my mind that would be one meal a day for me. My smoothie included kale, bananas, fresh berries, coconut milk, and pea protein powder. It both tasted good and kept me filled.

With regards to exercise, I made my mind up to do my own workouts at least 3 times a week for 2 weeks. My gym was simple. I used sledgehammers, resistance bands, my True Form, med ball, kettlebells, and resistance bands. The other workouts would be fun activities (kayaking, laser tag, swimming and alike ) I have to say 2 hours of laser tag was quite the workout! When on vacation I try to think like a kid. What you are doing daily, playing becomes exercise. So much of what we do is we judge over selves that we did not do enough today, especially when it comes to exercise. Personally, I think we all need cut ourselves some slack. There is a natural short term depression when coming back from vacation. So, when on it enjoy it and give yourself some time to get back to reality.

I was fortunate enough to work with him for 10 days to help him prep for tennis tryouts on his rerun. We used many of the BWK principles to increase his endurance, speed, mental toughness, and core strength.

Shake of the month

Since I am a NutriBullet ninja now, here’s one of my favorite drinks.

1 cup of kale

1 banana 

2 cups of berries

12 oz of coconut milk

1 serving pea protein powder

I have used this for an after workout shake and for a meal on the run. It sustains me for hours when working.
