Authenticity Matters – and So Does the License – Kevin Kearns

by Kevin Kearns, contributing writer

Here is something most people discussing stem cells don’t understand. MUSE cells aren’t simply another generic category of stem cell.

The original MUSE-cell technology was discovered by Professor Mari Dezawa and is protected by intellectual property covering the identification, isolation and application of these unique cells.

And this is where the distinction becomes extremely important.

According to our licensing documentation, the RBT/Froceth manufacturing platform holds the only current commercial license for scalable production of authentic Dezawa MUSE cells. That is very different from a company announcing that it intends to manufacture them.

A research relationship is not commercial production. A manufacturing collaboration is not commercial production. Having a laboratory capable of growing cells is not commercial production.

And having access to the name MUSE certainly doesn’t mean you have access to the authentic biological starting material or the licensed manufacturing process.

Commercial-scale cellular manufacturing requires an entire controlled chain:

• The correct biological starting material
• Authorized access to the technology
• A licensed manufacturing process
• Cell identity and characterization
• Controlled expansion
• GMP manufacturing standards
• Batch-specific quality control
• Traceability and documentation
• Reproducibility at commercial scale

That’s the difference between being able to study a technology and being able to commercially manufacture it at scale.

WHY DOES THAT MATTER?

Because with cellular medicine, the label isn’t the product. The biology is the product.

If the starting material is different, the product can be different. If the manufacturing process is different, the product can be different. If expansion changes the characteristics of the cells, the product can be different. That’s why I’ve become so focused on one phrase:

NOT ALL STEM CELLS ARE CREATED EQUAL

When someone tells you they’re offering MUSE cells, don’t simply ask how many cells are there. Ask:

Are these authentic Dezawa MUSE cells? Who manufactured them? Under whose commercial license? What is the source? How were they characterized?

What does the Certificate of Analysis show? Can the manufacturer demonstrate traceability back through the production chain? Those questions separate science from marketing.

Here at BWK Authentic Edge, that’s exactly what we want people asking. We’re not interested in winning the conversation with hype. We’re interested in winning it with science, documentation, transparency and education.

Know the source.
Know the science.
Know the license.
Know the manufacturer.
Know the documentation.

Because when you’re talking about the future of regenerative medicine, those distinctions matter.
