The Authentic Edge: Not All Stem Cells are Created Equal – Kevin Kearns

by Coach Kevin Kearns, contributing writer on fitness and exercise

What you should know before you buy into the regenerative medicine boom

Regenerative medicine is exploding!

Stem cells. Exosomes. Peptides. Longevity clinics. Anti-aging centers.

Everywhere you look, someone seems to be offering the “next breakthrough.”

But there is one question I believe consumers need to start asking:

What exactly are you getting?

Because saying “stem cells” is a little like saying “car.” A Honda and a Ferrari are both cars. That doesn’t mean they were engineered the same way, perform the same way, or cost the same amount to manufacture.

The same principle applies to cellular products.

THE TERM “STEM CELL” DOESN’T TELL YOU ENOUGH

When someone tells you they offer stem cells, that should be the beginning of the conversation—not the end.

Where did the cells come from? What type of cells are they? How were they isolated and expanded? How many times were they expanded? How were they characterized? What testing was performed? What manufacturing standards were followed? Can the manufacturer provide traceability and documentation?

Those questions matter.

In this rapidly expanding industry, source, identity, manufacturing and quality control matter just as much as the name on the vial.

MSCs: WHERE MOST PEOPLE START

One of the most discussed cell types in regenerative medicine is the mesenchymal stromal cell, or MSC. MSCs have been extensively researched for their signaling and immunomodulatory properties. Rather than thinking of them simply as replacement parts, think of MSCs partly as biological communicators. They can release signals that interact with the surrounding cellular environment and are being studied for their potential roles in inflammation, immune regulation and tissue repair.

But here’s where things get interesting:

Not every MSC is identical—and not every cell within an MSC population behaves identically.

That brings us to something most consumers have never heard of.

ENTER THE MUSE CELL

MUSE stands for:

Multilineage-differentiating Stress-Enduring cell. MUSE cells were identified by Japanese researcher Dr. Mari Dezawa and colleagues as a distinctive population of cells associated with mesenchymal tissues. They have attracted scientific interest because of several unusual characteristics, including their ability to withstand significant cellular stress, migrate toward areas of tissue damage under experimental conditions, and differentiate into multiple cell types. That makes them very different from the way most people traditionally think about MSCs.

An easy analogy is this:

MSCs may help influence the environment around an injury. MUSE cells are being investigated for their potential to participate more directly in tissue repair. That’s an important distinction. And it’s exactly why putting every cellular product under the generic label “stem cells” doesn’t tell the whole story.

FROM RESEARCH TO MANUFACTURING

This is where my work with RBT North America has taken me much deeper into the regenerative medicine world.

RBT’s European manufacturing platform produces both MSC and MUSE cellular products under controlled manufacturing processes.

That distinction is important to me. I spent more than 30 years coaching athletes, executives and everyday people. One of my rules has always been simple:

I don’t advocate something merely because it’s popular. I want to know what it is, where it came from and how it was produced.

The same standard should apply here.

When you’re dealing with a living biological product, manufacturing isn’t a side issue. Manufacturing is part of the science. Cell source matters. Cell identity matters. Expansion matters. Viability matters. Storage matters. Transportation matters. Testing matters. Documentation matters.

And ultimately, the physician evaluating the patient matters.

THE NEXT QUESTION: WHAT IS ACTUALLY IN THE VIAL?

The regenerative medicine market is growing incredibly quickly.

That’s exciting.

But rapid growth also creates confusion.

Consumers hear words like stem cells, exosomes, MUSE cells and regeneration and naturally assume products using the same terminology must be roughly equivalent. They aren’t necessarily.

Before considering any regenerative therapy, ask questions. Who manufactured it? Where was it manufactured? What type of cells are actually present? How were they characterized? What documentation accompanies the product? What evidence supports its proposed use?

And perhaps most importantly:

Is a qualified physician determining whether it is appropriate for you?

SCIENCE BEFORE HYPE

I’ve watched this same cycle happen throughout the health and fitness industry. A promising technology appears. Interest explodes.Marketing moves faster than education. And suddenly consumers have difficulty separating legitimate science from hype.

Regenerative medicine cannot afford to go down that road.

The future of cellular medicine may be extraordinary. But extraordinary claims aren’t what will move the field forward.

Better science will.

Better manufacturing will.

Better documentation will.

Better education will.

And better-informed consumers will.

So the next time someone tells you they’re offering “stem cells,” don’t stop there.

Ask the next question: What kind?

Then ask where they came from, how they were manufactured and what evidence supports their use.

Because when it comes to regenerative medicine: Not all stem cells are created equal.

And knowing the difference may be the most important part of the conversation.
