Over 16,000 Rhode Island Teens and 84,000 visits to Planet Fitness’ free High School Summer Pass program

More than 16,000 teens statewide signed up for the High School Summer Pass

More than 16,000 Rhode Island teens signed up for Planet Fitness’ free High School Summer Pass program this summer, logging 84,000 visits at clubs across the state between June 1 and August 31, according to the company.

Rhode Island’s participation contributed to what Planet Fitness described as a record year nationally, with approximately 3.7 million teens registering and completing more than 19.4 million workouts.

The program gives teens an opportunity to stay active during summer break, whether they are trying a gym for the first time or building on an existing fitness routine.

“We’re thrilled to see so many teens across Rhode Island prioritize their health and wellness through this year’s High School Summer Pass® program,” said Steve Venezia, CEO of Core Development and Management, a local Planet Fitness franchise group.

“It’s inspiring to watch this generation build healthy habits, gain confidence, and discover that fitness can be both welcoming and enjoyable,” Venezia said.

A company survey of participating teens and their parents and guardians found that the program introduced many young people to gym workouts. Nearly 58% of teens surveyed said this summer marked their first time exercising in a fitness club.

Participants also reported benefits beyond physical activity:

  • Mood and confidence: 93% reported an immediate improvement in mood after working out, 84% reported improvements in overall mental health, and 83% reported increased self-confidence.
  • Time with friends and siblings: 53% regularly worked out with a friend, 20% with a sibling, and 15% with a group of friends.
  • Family involvement: 42% of parents surveyed worked out alongside their teens, while 67% said their teen’s participation inspired other family members to become active.

The findings reflect participants’ self-reported experiences in a Planet Fitness survey of more than 1,000 participating teens and their parents, conducted July 13–21, 2026.

Since launching the program in 2019, Planet Fitness says it has waived more than $620 million in membership dues for teen participants. The company bases that estimate on more than 13 million participants, monthly dues of $10–$15, and the program’s three-month duration.
