Newport Restaurant Group Opening New Concept “where Applebees used to be” in Cranston’s Garden City
The new restaurant will be the 19th in the employee-owned company’s portfolio
Newport Restaurant Group (NRG), a 100% employee-owned award-winning collection of unique restaurants and hospitality venues located throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts, is pleased to announce that it will open a new restaurant in Garden City Center in Cranston, Rhode Island.
The 5,000 square-foot restaurant will be located at 24 Midway Road across from Kaffeology, and will feature a new, still-in-development concept. The new restaurant will be the 19th in NRG’s portfolio and the second in Garden City Center, which has been home to Avvio Ristorante since 2016.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring our brand of hospitality to this space,” said Mick Lamond, CEO, Newport Restaurant Group. “We look forward to adding to Garden City’s vibrant dining scene, and as an employee-owned company, we’ll be adding dozens of meaningful jobs in the community.”

Susan Walsh, General Manager of Garden City Center, added, “We are thrilled to continue our successful partnership with Newport Restaurant Group, a beloved Rhode Island–born brand that has been part of Garden City Center since 2016. The addition of another locally rooted, chef-driven restaurant further elevates our dining offerings and reinforces Garden City Center as a destination for exceptional food and memorable experiences.”
NRG is proudly 100% employee-owned, which allows staff to have a vested interest and share in the success of the company. This structure encourages engagement and accountability from employees and offers benefits that are atypical of the hospitality industry
“Employee-ownership is embedded in our culture, which elevates our ability to deliver great guest experiences on a consistent basis. We can’t wait to share a brand-new concept and our continued commitment to excellence with our guests in this new space,” continued Lamond.
