September 11th – 20 years. Full circle.

Photo: 911 Memorial

There are 1500 memorials throughout the US to 911. There are events in Rhode Island to attend. Some of them will have marches, others will have gatherings of veterans, a few will have objects that came from the Twin Towers on that fateful September 11th.

Here is an exhibit from the official 9-11 memorial in New York City – it contains an exhibit – The Day That Changed The World

We encourage you to connect with them online:

This is a good explanation to be shared with those who were too young to remember, or to be part of whatever you do, today, to remember the events of that day – we will only remember, forever, if we share our stories with one another – young and old:

The University of Rhode Island:

To commemorate the 20th anniversary here on the Kingston Campus, there will be a candle lighting ceremony tonight that was organized by the Delta Zeta sorority and junior Caitlin Spor, whose father, Joseph P. Spor Jr., a second-generation New York firefighter, was killed while rescuing people at the World Trade Center. The lighting will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. in front of the Memorial Union. The event will include the reading of the poem, “We Remember Them,” by members of Delta Zeta.

On Saturday morning, the bells on Davis Hall, on the edge of our beautiful Quadrangle, will ring out at the specific times the four planes crashed on 9/11. Each time, the bells will be rung five times — once each for our cherished alumni who died during those terrorist attacks.

The Timothy J. Mills’ Financial Aid Fund

The Timothy J. Mills’ Financial Aid Fund was established at Sail Newport in 2021 in memory of Newport’s former harbormaster, Tim Mills, who passed away in 2020. All dollars raised will be directed to the endowed fund which provides financial assistance to children in need seeking to participate in Sail Newport’s Summer Youth Sailing Program.

“Tim loved sailing in and around Narragansett Bay and loved encouraging new sailors, young and old. This Fund seems to be a perfect way to pay tribute to him in a way that he would have supported, sharing his love of the water and providing an opportunity for young sailors to experience sailing for the first time,” says Kathleen Dunn, Mills’ sister.

_____

From the Diocese of Providence – Prayer at Ground Zero Pope Benedict XI, New York, 20 April 2008:

O God of love, compassion, and healing,

look on us, people of many different faiths

and traditions,

who gather today at this site,

the scene of incredible violence and pain.

We ask you in your goodness

to give eternal light and peace

to all who died here–

the heroic first-responders:

our fire fighters, police officers,

emergency service workers, and

Port Authority personnel,

along with all the innocent men and women

who were victims of this tragedy

simply because their work or service

brought them here on September 11, 2001.

We ask you, in your compassion

to bring healing to those

who, because of their presence here that day,

suffer from injuries and illness.

Heal, too, the pain of still-grieving families

and all who lost loved ones in this tragedy.

Give them strength to continue their lives

with courage and hope.

We are mindful as well

of those who suffered death, injury, and loss

on the same day at the Pentagon and in

Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Our hearts are one with theirs

as our prayer embraces their pain and suffering.

God of peace, bring your peace to our violent world:

peace in the hearts of all men and women

and peace among the nations of the earth.

Turn to your way of love

those whose hearts and minds

are consumed with hatred.

God of understanding,

overwhelmed by the magnitude of this tragedy,

we seek your light and guidance

as we confront such terrible events.

Grant that those whose lives were spared

may live so that the lives lost here

may not have been lost in vain.

Comfort and console us,

strengthen us in hope,

and give us the wisdom and courage

to work tirelessly for a world

where true peace and love reign

among nations and in the hearts of all.
