Pawtucket Health Fair, Screenings, May 6 for Older Americans Month

Public Invited to Attend Senior Center Annual Health Fair on May 6th

The City of Pawtucket and the Leon Mathieu Senior Center (LMSC)/Pawtucket Division of Senior Services and the Administration for Community Living (ACL) will celebrate Older Americans Month this May, with the 2026 theme, “Champion Your Health.”

Observed since 1963, Older Americans Month recognizes the contributions of older adults, highlights key issues affecting their well-being, and reaffirms a national commitment to supporting their independence, health, and quality of life.

This year’s theme encourages older adults to take an active role in their health through prevention, proactive management of chronic conditions, and meaningful community engagement. It also underscores the importance of access to resources, informed decision-making, and maintaining strong social connections.

“Taking charge of your health doesn’t happen all at once—it’s built through everyday choices that support both body and mind,” said Mayor Donald R. Grebien. “Our role as a city is to make those choices easier by providing access to programs, services, and a supportive community environment. We are fortunate to have the Pawtucket Division of Senior Services, Leon Mathieu Senior Center, as a resource hub for services and programs for older adults.”

“Pawtucket is strongest when residents of every age have the opportunity to stay active and connected,” Grebien continued. “We’re focused on creating spaces and opportunities where older adults can continue to grow and feel valued.”

Adults aged 60 and older make up nearly 19% of Pawtucket’s population, making programs and services that promote healthy aging a vital part of the city’s mission. The Pawtucket Division of Senior Services, Leon Mathieu Senior Center, continues to play a key role by offering opportunities for wellness, education, socialization, community involvement, and the resources needed to age in the community.

“We see firsthand that healthy aging is not just about one’s physical health.  It’s about staying informed, engaged, and connected to others,” said Mary Lou Moran, Director of the Pawtucket Division of Senior Services, Leon Mathieu Senior Center. “Even small steps, like joining a class or attending an event, can have a lasting impact.”

“Our work is centered on helping people maintain independence while also building a sense of belonging,” Moran added. “When individuals feel supported and connected, their overall well-being improves in meaningful ways.”

Throughout May, the Pawtucket Division of Senior Services, Leon Mathieu Senior Center, will host a variety of programs and activities designed to help residents “Champion Their Health,” including wellness workshops, fitness classes, health screenings, and social events that foster connection and engagement.

The public is invited to attend the 2026 Senior Center Annual Health Fair on May 6th at the Leon Mathieu Senior Center, located at 420 Main Street in Pawtucket. The event will run from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM.

Attendees will have the opportunity to visit over 35 health-related vendors, including home care agencies, respite services provided by the State of Rhode Island, and nutrition education providers. A variety of health screenings will also be available, such as bone density testing, blood pressure checks, DermaScan, fall-risk assessments, podiatry services, and hearing tests.

Additionally, guests can enjoy a cooking demonstration, and Alison Bologna from NBC10 will be present at the event.

Residents are encouraged to participate in these programs, explore available resources, and support older adults in their efforts to prioritize health and well-being.
