Electric Boat Lands Historic Navy Contracts — 18% of the Work Will Be Done in Rhode Island
The Navy has awarded a historic $76.6 billion submarine-construction package involving General Dynamics Electric Boat and HII-Newport News Shipbuilding, with 18% of the work expected to take place at Electric Boat’s Quonset Point facility in Rhode Island. The contracts cover five Columbia-class and nine Virginia-class submarines, with work continuing through July 2038.
The contract modifications include $29.5 billion for five Columbia-class ballistic-missile submarines and $42.1 billion for nine Virginia-class attack submarines. The broader package also includes additional funding for shipyard infrastructure. Details are available in the Department of War contract announcements here and here.
“These important contract modifications provide Electric Boat and our suppliers with the demand certainty we need to continue investing in capacity and hiring the workforce necessary to ensure we deliver these important national security assets on schedule,” Electric Boat President Mark Rayha said.
According to the Navy’s contract announcement, 18% of the work will be performed at Electric Boat’s Quonset Point facility, with 30% in Groton and 22% in Newport News. The contracts cover five Columbia-class submarines and nine Virginia-class submarines, plus materials for a possible tenth Virginia-class boat, with the work expected to continue through July 2038.
Headquartered in Groton, Connecticut, Electric Boat designs, builds, repairs and modernizes nuclear submarines for the Navy. The General Dynamics subsidiary employs more than 27,000 people, including thousands at its facilities in Groton and Quonset Point, Rhode Island.
General Dynamics, headquartered in Reston, Virginia, employs more than 120,000 people worldwide and reported $52.6 billion in revenue in 2025.
