NAACP Providence mourns passing of Justice Ginsburg
NAACP PROVIDENCE BRANCH MOURNS THE PASSING OF JUSTICE RUTH BADER GINSBURG
by Jim Vincent, NAACP–Providence Branch
The NAACP Providence Branch mourns the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Justice Ginsburg led an honorable legacy as a champion of civil rights in our nation.
National NAACP President & CEO Derrick Johnson stated “Justice Ginsburg was an incredibly accomplished civil rights lawyer who devoted her entire legal career to the pursuit of equal justice and eliminating discrimination of all types. When President Bill Clinton nominated her to the Supreme Court, he called her the “Thurgood Marshall of gender equality law.”
As the second woman to serve on the Supreme Court, Justice Ginsburg acknowledged the importance of representation of women in leadership.
The NAACP Providence Branch is proud to support candidates Judge Melissa Long to serve on the RI Supreme Court, Attorney Elizabeth Ortiz to serve on the RI Family Court, and Attorney Maria Ferro Deaton to serve on the RI Superior court. Each judicial candidate is a woman of color in Rhode Island who we believe will lead with a passion for justice similar to Justice Ginsburg.
As an organization, the NAACP will continue to honor Justice Ginsburg’s memory and extraordinary contributions to protecting the civil rights of the people in our nation.
