My Performance Edge, Week 12. Movement Is Medicine: Why Your Body Was Designed to Move – Kevin Kearns

For more than 40 years, I’ve worked with professional athletes, UFC fighters, executives, first responders, and adults simply trying to stay healthy as they age. During that time, I’ve seen incredible advances in medicine.

Stem cells.

Peptides.

Exosomes.

Artificial intelligence.

Wearable technology.

Regenerative medicine.

Each has the potential to improve healthcare.

But after four decades in health and performance, I’ve come to one conclusion:

The most powerful medicine available to us is something we’ve been given since birth – Movement.

Your Body Was Never Designed to Sit – The human body evolved through movement.

Walking.

Running.

Climbing.

Carrying.

Lifting.

Throwing.

Squatting.

Our muscles, bones, joints, heart, lungs, and brain all developed together because movement was essential for survival. Today, many of us spend more than ten hours each day sitting.

We drive.

We work at computers.

We watch television.

We scroll on our phones.

The body hasn’t changed.

Our environment has.

Movement Changes Your Biology

Exercise isn’t simply about burning calories. Movement creates biological signals throughout the body.  When you exercise, muscles release specialized signaling proteins known as myokines.

Researchers continue to study how these molecules communicate with the brain, liver, bones, immune system, and adipose tissue.

Movement doesn’t just strengthen muscles. It influences nearly every organ system in the body.

Your Brain Loves Exercise

One of the greatest misconceptions is that exercise is only for physical fitness. The brain benefits just as much.

Regular movement increases blood flow, supports healthy glucose regulation, and stimulates the production of proteins such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).

BDNF is often referred to as “fertilizer for the brain” because it supports neuron survival, learning, memory, and neuroplasticity. Every workout becomes an investment in your future cognitive health.

Movement and Mitochondria

Inside every cell are tiny energy-producing structures called mitochondria. Think of them as microscopic power plants.

Exercise stimulates the body to build new mitochondria while improving the efficiency of existing ones.

Better mitochondria mean better energy production.

Better recovery.

Better endurance.

Better metabolic health.

This is one reason regular movement remains one of the most effective longevity interventions available.

Muscle: Your Longevity Organ

For years we viewed muscle simply as something that made us stronger. Today we understand it’s much more. Skeletal muscle functions as a metabolic organ. Healthy muscle helps regulate blood sugar, improves insulin sensitivity, supports bone health, contributes to hormonal balance, and releases myokines that communicate throughout the body.

Maintaining muscle isn’t about appearance. It’s about preserving independence, resilience, and quality of life.

Exercise Helps Regulate Inflammation

Inflammation is essential for healing. The challenge comes when inflammation becomes chronic. Research consistently demonstrates that regular physical activity helps regulate inflammatory processes while improving immune function. This may be one reason physically active individuals often experience better recovery and improved long-term health outcomes.

Regenerative Medicine Is Built Upon Movement

People often ask me whether peptides, stem cells, or exosomes can replace exercise. My answer is always the same.

Absolutely not.

These therapies are being investigated because they may support biological repair and communication. Exercise creates those biological signals naturally.

What once seemed like common sense is now being validated by modern biology.

The Best Prescription

If I could write one prescription for nearly every person I meet, it would include:

  • Walk every day.
  • Lift weights at least two to three times each week.
  • Challenge your balance.
  • Improve your mobility.
  • Build strength.
  • Recover well.
  • Sleep consistently.
  • Eat whole foods.
  • Keep learning.
  • Never stop moving.

These habits cost very little.

Yet their return on investment may exceed almost any intervention available today.

Final Thoughts

Regenerative medicine is exciting.

Peptides are exciting.

Stem cells and exosomes represent remarkable scientific advances.

But none of them replace the incredible medicine built into the human body itself.

Movement is how we evolved.

Movement is how we adapt.

Movement is how we heal.

Technology will continue to evolve.

New therapies will emerge.

But one truth will remain: Your body was designed to move. The more we honor that design, the greater our opportunity to live stronger, healthier, and more resilient lives.
