LIVE theater again! Trinity’s “Gem of the Ocean”

August Wilson’s “Gem of the Ocean” from the legendary playwright, will run from February 24th to March 27th.

Set in 1904 Pittsburgh where slavery was still living memory, Gem of the Ocean offers a searing and mystical exploration of freedom, justice, and reclamation. Racked with secret guilt, a desperate Citizen Barlow seeks refuge at the home of ancient Aunt Ester. Renowned for soul cleansing, Ester sends Citizen on an epic journey to the City of Bones, to find redemption and renewed purpose. Gem of the Ocean chronologically begins August Wilson’s ten-play American Century Cycle, chronicling decade-by-decade African American experiences in the 20th century.

After 20 years away from Trinity Rep, former company member Rose Weaver returns as Aunt Ester. Rose last appeared in 2001’s production of The Piano Lesson, which is another play by August Wilson in his American Century Cycle, along with Gem co-star Ricardo Pitts-Wiley. She was also Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grille in 1994, which was one of Trinity Rep’s longest-running shows. Trinity promotions say, “As Aunt Ester (pronounced like “ancestor”), Rose brings wisdom and humor to this must-see production”.
