Burn with Kearns: Unveiling a fitness blueprint for the New Year, Part 4 – Kevin Kearns

by Kevin Kearns, contributing writer on exercise and fitness

Dear RI NEWS Today Readers!

Greetings to our valued readers in the 45 and up age group! In this edition of RI News Today, we are excited to share insights from Coach Kearns as he continues to unveil his fitness blueprint tailored specifically for a part of our demographic.

As we explore the Burn with Kearns formula, it’s essential to highlight the eight elements of human performance, emphasizing not just athletic prowess but the ability to navigate daily activities effortlessly. Whether you find yourself engaged in a pickup game of hockey or simply carrying your children up a flight of stairs, our program model is designed to prepare you for the demands of everyday life.

Today’s focus is on the element of pushing, targeting key muscle groups such as the chest, shoulders, and triceps, with a special emphasis on engaging the core. While traditional exercises like the bench press and push-ups immediately come to mind, Coach Kearns introduces innovative modifications to maximize efficiency and results.

For instance, consider the simple dumbbell chest press on a bench. To enhance its effectiveness, Coach Kearns suggests incorporating elements of the eight performance elements by performing this exercise on a stability ball. This modification not only adds a balance factor but engages additional muscle groups such as the glutes, hamstrings, and inner thighs, resulting in a more comprehensive workout that burns more calories in less time.

To provide a visual guide on how to optimize a dumbbell chest press, Coach Kearns will showcase examples in his upcoming videos.

Moving on to push-ups, a classic exercise with endless variations. Coach Kearns introduces one of his favorite challenging modifications – the rotational push-up. While it may not be for the faint of heart, this exercise not only targets pushing muscles but also enhances balance, core strength, and static strength.

We encourage you to incorporate these modified exercises into your next workout and share your experiences with us. Your feedback is invaluable, and we’re excited to hear how these modifications benefit your fitness journey.

Yours in Vision, Passion, and Perseverance,

Coach Kearns
