Burn with Kearns: Training Like a Fighter Starts in Your Gut – Kevin Kearns
by Coach Kevin Kearns, contributing writer
Why High Performers Over 40 Can’t Afford to Ignore Gut Health
If you’re a high performer, you already understand discipline.
You train.
You work.
You push.
But here’s the reality most people overlook:
If your gut isn’t right, your performance isn’t either.
This is something I’ve seen for over 30 years—working with everyone from professional fighters to executives managing companies, families, and high-pressure lifestyles. When the gut is off, everything is harder.
The Gut: Your Hidden Performance System
We tend to think of fitness as muscles, strength, and conditioning. But your gut is the system behind the system.
It directly influences:
- Energy levels
- Recovery speed
- Inflammation
- Hormonal balance
- Mental clarity
In fact, your gut and brain are constantly communicating. When your gut is inflamed or compromised, it doesn’t just show up physically—it shows up mentally. That “fog,” that lack of drive, that dip in energy?
It’s not always age.
It’s often internal.
Why This Matters More After 40
As we get older, the margin for error shrinks.
You can no longer:
- Eat whatever you want
- Sleep poorly
- Stay in a constant state of stress
…and expect to perform at a high level.
For many of the men I work with—executives, entrepreneurs, leaders—this is the turning point. They’re successful professionally, but their body starts sending signals:
- Stubborn weight gain
- Slower recovery
- Digestive discomfort
- Lower energy despite effort
This is often where gut health becomes the missing link.
You Can’t Out-Train a Compromised System
I’ve built my career on effective, efficient, and safe training. But no training system—no matter how advanced—can override a body that isn’t functioning properly internally. You don’t need more intensity. You need better alignment. And that starts with your gut.
___
Foundational Strategies to Strengthen Gut Health Naturally
Prioritize Real, Whole Foods

Support Your Microbiome
Your gut thrives on balance. Incorporate natural sources of beneficial bacteria:
- Yogurt
- Kefir
- Sauerkraut
- Kimchi
These help reinforce the internal environment your body depends on.
Hydrate with Purpose
Hydration is often overlooked—but critical.
Proper hydration supports:
- Digestion
- Nutrient absorption
- Energy levels
It’s a small habit with a significant return.
Control Stress Before It Controls You
Chronic stress is one of the fastest ways to disrupt gut health.
For high performers, this is often the biggest challenge.
Simple, effective strategies:
- Breathwork
- Walking outdoors
- Mobility or yoga sessions
- Intentional downtime
Mental resilience is built through physical practices
Give Your Body Time to Reset
Constant input leads to constant stress on your system.
Strategic approaches like:
- Intermittent fasting
- Avoiding late-night eating
- Simplifying meals
…allow your body to recover and operate more efficiently.
The Bottom Line for High Performers
Gut health isn’t a trend.
It’s a performance multiplier.
When you improve your gut, you improve:
- Energy
- Focus
- Recovery
- Body composition
- Longevity
This is how you continue to operate at a high level—not just now, but for decades to come
Final Thought: Build From the Inside Out
In my world, we train like fighters.
But real strength isn’t just external.
It’s internal.
If you want to perform, lead, and live at a high level—start with your foundation.
Start with your gut!
