Burn with Kearns: From Bullying to Breakthrough – Kevin Kearns
by Coach Kevin Kearns, contributing writer
Why Our Schools Must Rethink Physical Education, Anti-Bullying, and Self-Defense
Imagine walking into school every day knowing there’s a target on your back. Your confidence is gone. Your voice is quiet. Your body language says everything before you even speak. And no matter how many policies, assemblies, or speeches the school puts in place… nothing changes.
That’s the reality for too many kids today.
And it was mine growing up.
Bullying isn’t just a school issue—it’s a life-altering experience.
In my book *Always Picked Last*, I share what it was like growing up as the kid who wasn’t chosen, wasn’t respected, and often wasn’t safe. What changed my life wasn’t a speech or punishment handed to a bully.
It was stepping into a martial arts dojo. That environment taught me discipline, respect, and self-control. It gave me confidence—and once confidence shows up, everything changes.
THE REAL PROBLEM
Most anti-bullying programs are reactive, not proactive. They tell kids what not to do—but don’t show them how to become stronger and more resilient.
WHAT SCHOOLS NEED NOW
- Stronger Physical Education
- Self-Defense Education
- Movement-Based Mental Health
LESSONS FROM “ALWAYS PICKED LAST”
You don’t need to become a fighter to stop being a victim – You need to become confident.
WHY THIS MATTERS IN RHODE ISLAND
We’re seeing rising anxiety and disconnection while reducing physical education and structure.
BOTTOM LINE
I wasn’t born confident. I built it—and every child deserves that chance.
QUICK TAKEAWAYS
- Confidence prevents bullying
- Strength builds resilience
- Movement improves mental health
–
A Final Thought:
You don’t stop bullying by telling kids to be nice.
You stop it by building kids who no longer feel like targets.
Confidence is the cure.
