Black History Month with 28th annual Langston Hughes Community Poetry Reading

In its 28th year, the annual Langston Hughes Community Poetry Reading is a legacy event that remains the must-see opening entree into Black History Month events in Rhode Island.

This Sunday, February 5th, 2023 celebration of poems from an international icon with Rhode Island ties, the late Langston Hughes, amplifies his extended reach beyond being the writer and voice of the Harlem Renaissance.

In particular, his cooking prowess is showcased this year because like his poetry, food is nourishing for the soul. Tasty bites are also at the center of most festive events, and often helps heal and further unite communities.

This occasion also continues to bring people together. A diverse group – young, old and of different backgrounds, professions, abilities and races – will read and perform selected poems from Hughes’ extensive collection of work. They will be accompanied by Mike Rollins, local saxophonist, recording artist and founder of Mike Rollins & Company. Rollins who has played with, among others, Kenny Lattimore, Cece Penniston and Damien Escobar.

This 1PM gathering in Providence Public Library’s (PPL) renovated Donald J. Farish Auditorium is free and open to the public. In addition to PPL, sponsors and partners include the Providence Department of Art, Culture & Tourism, the Rhode Island Foundation and the Papitto Opportunity Connection (POC) Foundation.
