Storm Damage to Federal Hill’s La Pigna. Coming Down TODAY for Repairs, Restoration

Federal Hill Commerce Association Plans Altered for Preservation and Revitalization of the Historic La Pigna Arch 

Newly discovered storm damage will require the removal of the iconic La Pigna atop Providence’s Federal Hill Arch as restoration and revitalization plans move forward.

The Federal Hill Commerce Association announced that inspections revealed additional damage caused by the Blizzard of 2026 and subsequent snowstorms. The deterioration was not present when the landmark was inspected in late 2025.

The La Pigna will be removed at 9 a.m. TODAY, Wednesday, September 2, allowing restoration specialists to address the damage in a controlled environment. Project leaders said the additional work is not expected to disrupt the overall restoration schedule.

“The preservation of this important Federal Hill landmark remains our priority,” the association said. Updates will be provided as the work progresses and when the La Pigna is ready to be reinstalled.

The new damage was discovered shortly after state, city and neighborhood leaders announced final plans for a broader preservation and revitalization project involving the historic gateway.

Officials had gathered with the Federal Hill Commerce Association leaders at Garibaldi Park on August 19 to outline the ambitious project that will transform the welcoming gateway. Plans were for the public to be able to watch as the project takes shape.

Restoration work will address the Arch’s columns, crowns, decorative features and other defining architectural elements while preserving its familiar appearance and historic character.

Plans also call for updated electrical infrastructure, new architectural lighting and a proposed gold-gilded treatment for the La Pigna, creating a more prominent focal point at the entrance to Federal Hill.

Improvements will extend to the surrounding public space, with new benches, planters, enhanced lighting and other beautification work intended to create a more welcoming pedestrian environment.

“Today, thanks to Mayor Smiley, Governor McKee and private donors, we announce a commitment to preserve and enhance the historic and cultural significance of the Federal Hill Arch and La Pigna,” FHCA President Rick Simone said when the project was unveiled.

The larger goal is to preserve the Arch not simply as a landmark people pass beneath, but as a celebrated gateway representing Federal Hill’s history, culture and continuing vitality.
