RINewsToday – New England Foliage Report, Oct. 25, 2025

Your New England Foliage Report for This Weekend, Oct. 3-5, 2025 – UPDATED

By RINewsToday Staff

New England’s leaf-peeping season is moving fast this year — and this first full weekend of October will bring some of the best early color for travelers willing to head north or west. From the ridgelines of Vermont and New Hampshire to the first tints in Rhode Island’s back roads, fall is officially underway.

New England Overview

A stretch of warm, sunny days and cool nights has created near-perfect conditions for color. Northern zones — from Maine through the White Mountains — are at or near peak, while central New England is glowing with oranges and reds that will deepen through next week.
Southern New England is still early, but scattered bursts of color are appearing in the valleys and along rural corridors.

Where to Go This Weekend

Maine
Northern Maine has hit full peak — brilliant reds, golds, and oranges. Great drives include the Golden Road near Millinocket and scenic loops around Rangeley Lake.

New Hampshire
The White Mountains are showing their best color of the season. The Kancamagus Highway, Route 302 through Crawford Notch, and the Mount Washington Valley are must-see spots. Arrive early or plan a sunset drive to avoid crowds.

Vermont
The Green Mountains are peaking north of Route 4, with blazing color around Stowe, Smugglers’ Notch, and the Northeast Kingdom. Expect excellent viewing next week as color spreads south along Route 100.

Massachusetts
The Berkshires are now in moderate to high color, especially along the Mohawk Trail and Mount Greylock Scenic Byway. Central and eastern Massachusetts are just starting to turn.

Connecticut
Early color is showing across the northwestern hills and the Quiet Corner (Route 169). The full show is expected closer to Columbus Day weekend, but maples and birches are already shifting.

Rhode Island
Rhode Island is still mostly green, but north and west — Chepachet, Foster, and Burrillville — are beginning to turn. Arcadia Management Area and Blackstone Valley offer early splashes of yellow and red, hinting at what’s to come later this month.

Weekend Weather

Weather across the region looks ideal for leaf peeping:

  • Sunny to partly sunny skies

  • Highs in the upper 60s to low 70s

  • Cool nights in the 40s

The combination of warm days and crisp nights should keep the colors vivid and the viewing conditions excellent through early next week.

Tips for Travelers

  • Go early or late to avoid traffic on major routes like the Kancamagus and Route 100.

  • Book ahead — many inns and B&Bs are full in northern New England.

  • Closer to home: Try Route 102 through western RI, or Route 169 between Woodstock, CT and Burrillville, RI for a relaxing local drive.

  • Photographers: Early morning and late afternoon give the richest tones and best light.

The Takeaway

It’s peak leaf-peeping time in northern New England, with central areas glowing and southern areas just beginning to show color. If you’ve been waiting to plan that foliage day trip, this weekend is your sign to go.

“October’s Voice”

The morning air grows thin and clear,
A hush before the wind draws near.
Maples whisper — gold to flame,
Each leaf a spark, no two the same.

The hills are dressed in fleeting fire,
The day is brief, but hearts aspire.
Old stone walls and pumpkin light,
Guide us gently into night.

Footsteps crunch where stories rest,
The world slows down — and feels its best.
For autumn speaks in hues so deep,
That even time forgets to keep.
