Burn with Kearns: Empower your child with “Always Picked Last” program – Kevin Kearns
by Kevin Kearns, contributing writer on fitness and exercise
Dear Parents,
Is your child consistently picked last in sports, or do they face the daunting fear of going to school every day? The challenges our kids encounter have become more pronounced in the digital age, with phones, tablets, and the web dominating their attention—especially after the disruptions caused by Covid. Social skills have taken a hit, and the barriers erected during the pandemic have further exacerbated the issue in this new age of Instagram and TikTok, where children are socializing less.
I share this from personal experience, having been that kid who struggled in every sport, from attire, to shoes. This predicament can either make or break a child, and for me, losing my father at 12 nearly broke me. Over 40 years later, I still carry his memory daily, wearing his wedding ring on my right hand.
Fortunately, a close uncle encouraged me to embrace Karate and self-defense, sparking a lifelong passion. Through this journey, I discovered that practice, discipline, and resilience are key elements in overcoming challenges. Discipline, in particular, stands out as a crucial lesson, especially when motivation wanes.
It’s essential for parents to recognize the significance of discipline, a trait that few of us were fortunate enough to learn as children. Despite coordination challenges or being late bloomers, there’s potential for every child to become an athlete. Many pro athletes, including local heroes like Tom Brady, incorporate martial arts like Western boxing and Muay Thai into their regular training routines.
Beyond the physical benefits, martial arts instill confidence through regular training. Children not only develop essential skills but also form lasting bonds with peers who share similar experiences. As the saying goes in martial arts, relationships built on the mat last forever.
Malach training offers children a holistic experience, including improved balance, coordination, self-control, muscle endurance, core strength, and effective anger management. Hitting focus mitts or a heavy bag becomes a cathartic release, addressing emotional challenges as they grow into adults.
Even adults in my classes have reported feeling better and experiencing relief after such sessions. Exposing your child to self-defense or martial arts can be a profound gift, fostering confidence and self-esteem for years to come.
As parents, it’s crucial to consider providing your child with the tools to navigate challenges like bullying. Consider bringing them into a program that promotes discipline, resilience, and self-esteem. This investment in your child’s well-being can have lasting positive effects, just as it has for me and countless others.
As a special gift to all here is my book ” Always Picked Last ” A Guide to Conquering the Bullies ” on read by a friend of 14 year son and then he interviews me after each chapter! Complementary for all for all your support !
Thank You All !
May this help someone feel more worthy today !
Sincerely, Coach Kevin Kearns
