The Shame of Russia

(Original story, 2/24/2022)

Overnight the Russian forces began their attack on the Ukraine. No surprise to any who have been watching this buildup for the past few weeks and months.

Beginning in the very early morning hours of today Russian attacks were targeted at defense systems in the Ukraine – with claims made within a few hours that the defense systems of the country have been destroyed.

As the sun came up, there was mostly eerie quiet in the major cities. Traffic jams of people leaving for more rural areas. People standing in lines at ATMs, and waiting in lines at gas stations. Thousands, if not eventually millions, headed to the Polish area border. Subway systems being converted into shelters, of sorts.

Russia let it be known that if the Ukraine troops put down their weapons they could return to their homes.

The UN met in special session. The Ukrainian ambassador to the UN told the Russian ambassador that war criminals “go straight to hell”. Sergiy Kyslytsya told the UN that war has started in his country and it was up “to this body” to end it.

Both the UN and the United States issued their expected statements of condemnation. This morning the G7 will meet virtually and President Biden is set to address the American people and the global platform later today.

Military experts say that Russian President Putin does not intend to desecrate the Ukraine – he intends to neutralize its position as any kind of threat to the country. His missiles didn’t fly at civilian targets – 50,000 people have not been killed. Cyber attacks have been meant to show what they can do – yet they have not taken down the internet or the water system, or the power grid.

It’s clear that the Ukraine is not any sort of match for Russia. Looking at the map of Russian positioning made that obvious way before the first shots were fired or the first planes flew. The Ukraine, early on 2/24 said that 40 people had died. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said Russia’s invasion “echoed the behavior of Nazi Germany during World War II”.

The economy worldwide will take a massive hit. Russia as well, though they have been preparing for it for years – stockpiling savings and oil.

US President Joe Biden said in a statement that he “condemned this unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces” and would work with the G7 and allies to impose “severe sanctions.”

There have been hushed comments that Putin seems paranoid. Comments made during the early hours of the attack threatened any world power that intervened, including the United States.

It seems inevitable that a new world order in the region will begin. A new cold war. Surely, not a world war.

What weapons can fight Putin – can fight the Russian military orders? It’s clear that any country who attacks will be met with overwhelming force. The weapon that will be the most effective, over time, and time to let this play out will be the most difficult, will be the people of Russia. They are talking. Talking about the shame of their country. Many in Ukraine speak Russian, are related to those in Russia. The people Putin is attacking are not lifelong enemies, but estranged family in many ways.

While the world figures out what to do, the attack stations of Russia have closed in inside the country. They literally surround it from all sides, including Odessa and the ports. The feckless United Nations can issue their statements to Putin to pull out. The United States can close international banking. Pipelines can be shut down. We already told Russia what they can expect while the world watched Putin put together the strategy – mapping it – reporting on it – never stopping it.

So for now, the Ukrainians have come out of the dark, listening to bombs in the distance. They have gathered their papers, gotten into their cars and driven out of their cities – or stayed inside their homes. They listen to the air raids. They wait. Like a game of chess, or maybe even simpler, checkers, world powers will say what we expect them to; sanctions, military flare-ups will happen. But the weapon will be the seething shame of the Russian people themselves, to bolster their country and decide what to do about the madman, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, who is President of their country, who is shaking such a tenuous peace in the world.

This is a developing story…
