SHAKING OFF THE HOLIDAY BLUES

Lots of folks struggle with getting back to normal after the holidays. “Experts” explain that the return of “normal” responsibilities adds stress and causes the blues, but there are ways of getting past all that. FORBES gathered these so-called experts around an Egg Nog and here are their suggestions to overcome those blues:

-Reflect on positive moments

-Create meaningful resolutions

-Prioritize social connections

-Engage in self-care practices

-Embrace change and growth

Hope they didn’t pay these “experts” much for those suggestions. For many, the holiday season actually creates MORE stress. Sure, taking down the decorations and tossing the tree to the side of the road (what a dismal sight) can be a bummer, but try to welcome in a fresh year with open arms… actually embrace change and grow, is pretty sound advice.

IS NOTHING SACRED?

As the New Year rang in at 12:01 am January 1st, the earliest iteration of one of the world’s most beloved children’s characters rang out and entered the world of public domain. We’re talking  Mickey Mouse here, folks, in his earliest Walt Disney cartoon images. Shortly after entering public domain, the trailer for a slasher flick entitled MICKEY’S MOUSE TRAP emerged online. In it, clips from Disney’s animated classic, STEAMBOAT WILLIE, are shown interspersed with recently shot footage telling the story of a mouse mask-wearing killer who stalks college age kids at an arcade. Expect this to be just the start of many warped cruises STEAMBOAT WILLIE will now be navigating in THE world of public DOMAIN.

HIS  BRILLIANCE STILL SHINES

We’re BIG fans of the (original) Twilight Zone and look forward to SCY FY Channel’s annual Twilight Zone Marathon. This year it ran from December 30th until the wee hours of January 2nd. Even though we’ve seen the episodes SO many times, they still seem fresh. The series ran for 5 years from 1959 ’til 1964 with a total of 156 episodes. Of those, 92 were written by the show’s creator, Rod Serling. His writing is as crisp today as it was over 60 years ago.

ONE LUCKY WINNER

A single Powerball ticket sold in Michigan has matched all six numbers to win $842 million on the New Year’s Day Lot drawing. The lucky winner has the option of a lump sum $452 million before taxes, and has a full year to come forward to claim the prize. Some talk show host will claim all winning a BIG lottery prize does is ruin your life. We’d take the chance.

(Jen will be back next week…)
