Rhode Island Weather for January 23, 2026 – Operation Winter Weather Warning
Expect a cold and mostly cloudy start, with temperatures around 25–28°F. No significant precipitation is currently forecast for the early morning hours, though skies will be gray and wintry in feel.
Afternoon:
Cloudy conditions continue into the afternoon with highs near 34–36°F. The chance of light snow or flurries is low but non-zero, and winds will stay light to moderate out of the north/northwest.
Evening:
The evening remains mostly cloudy and cold, with temperatures dropping back into the mid-20s. Dry conditions are expected for now, though clouds will persist.
Overall Letter Grade: B-
A quiet but cold day with mostly cloudy skies and no significant precipitation. It’s a typical mid-January winter day — dry and stable, but not strongly pleasant. A perfect time to prepare for what could be 2-4 days of pretty bad weather conditions, when clean-up is added in.
Operation Winter Weather Warning
Storm Threat for Rhode Island This Weekend – Jan 24-26
-
A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Sunday into Monday (Jan. 25–26) in the Providence area, with snow likely and potentially heavy at times. The National Weather Service calls for snow mainly after late morning Sunday, with **3–5 inches possible Sunday and 4–8 inches Sunday night, and snow continuing into Monday.
Models and local meteorologists are indicating a substantial winter storm setup this weekend, as an Arctic air mass and a moisture-rich system approach the Northeast. Snow is forecast to move in by midday Sunday and intensify into Sunday night and Monday, with snow accumulation probable across Southern New England.
Regional & National Context
-
National outlets are now calling this a major winter storm event affecting much of the U.S. this weekend, with heavy snow, ice, and dangerously cold temperatures expected in many regions, including the Northeast. Cities from the mid-Atlantic to New England are being highlighted for significant snowfall potential — including Providence.
New England models are suggesting this could be one of the bigger snowstorms in years, with 8–16+ inches possible across parts of southern New England depending on the exact track and intensity.
What This Means for RI
-
Confidence is increasing that Rhode Island could see considerable plowable snow this weekend. The official NWS forecast already reflects a Winter Storm Watch, which is the precursor to advisories and warnings and generally means conditions could be hazardous.
The biggest uncertainties remain the storm’s track and temperature profile (snow vs. sleet/ice near the coast), which will refine how much snow falls and where. But the storm signal is strong and growing.
A confident “at least 6 inches” with as much as “12-20” is in play – this will be updated as time goes by.
Short take:
There’s a strong signal for a major winter storm pattern hitting the Northeast this weekend, with impacts ranging from accumulating snow to dangerous cold and travel trouble somewhere in the region. Rhode Island should be ready for snow and disruptive winter weather over Jan. 24–26, but watch local National Weather Service forecasts for precise timing and totals as the system approaches.
We should have a finer look at what is ahead soon – but for now – it’s preparation time!
