Real Estate in RI: Seaview Terrace. 29 BRs. $28.5M. Newport’s last great “summer cottage” – Marielle Clair
Seaview Terrace – 43,722 sq. ft. | 7.7 Acres | 64 Rooms | 29 Bedrooms | Offered at $28,500,000
The Estate Story
Seaview Terrace, also known as the Carey Mansion, is the largest privately owned mansion in New England and one of the five great Newport mansions alongside The Breakers, Ochre Court, Belcourt Castle, and Rough Point.
Built in the 1920s for industrialist Edson Bradley, its 43,000 sq. ft. French Gothic Revival design incorporates imported treasures: 15th-century stained glass from Germany, Venetian Renaissance ceiling frescos, and carved stone fireplaces from France.
Renowned as the last of Newport’s great “summer cottages”, Seaview represents the final chapter of the Gilded Age, completed just before the Great Depression ended such ambitious estates. In the 1970s, preservationists Martin and Millicent Carey safeguarded Seaview, founding Seaview C.A.R.E.S. (Carey Architectural Restoration Education Society) to promote its restoration and preservation. Today, Seaview Terrace represents both a storied cultural landmark and a rare opportunity — an estate ready for its next chapter.
A Century of Grandeur Overlooking Newport’s Cliff Walk

With its 64 rooms, 29 bedrooms and 7.64 acres of land, it remains one of the last great American estates in private hands.
