Pawtucket Announces Winter Preparedness, Parking, Senior Snow Shoveling Plans

As winter approaches, the City of Pawtucket is taking proactive steps to prepare our community for the upcoming snow season.
The City has released an updated Snow Plan, including revised parking rules that will take effect in the event of a snowstorm.
The City is also activating its Youth to Senior Snow Shoveling Program, which connects local student volunteers with Pawtucket seniors aged 65 and over who need assistance shoveling snow during the winter months. While the program is currently at capacity, those looking for more information can contact Chief Equity Officer Charles “Chachi” Carvalho, (401) 728-0500, ext. 227, or email ccarvalho@pawtucketri.gov.
“We are pleased to once again offer this program for our seniors. Our Youth to Senior Snow Shoveling initiative is a shining example of what can happen when a community comes together with purpose,” said Mayor Grebien. “Not only do our seniors receive essential support to remain safe in their homes, but our youth also build a sense of pride and civic responsibility while forming relationships with their older neighbors.”
In the event of a snowstorm, there is a list of public parking locations where residents may leave their vehicles while on-street parking bans remain in effect.
“Keeping our roads safe and clear during storms is a team effort,” said Mayor Donald Grebien. “We ask residents to stay alert for parking bans and use the designated alternative parking areas when needed. The quicker we can get cars off the streets, the faster our plows can work — and we thank everyone for doing their part.”
The city usually declares a winter storm emergency when two or more inches of snow are predicted. Once this emergency is declared, an on-street parking ban will be enforced on all city streets. At that time, all vehicles must be moved off the street.
The parking ban will be posted on local radio and television broadcasts and the city website.
Residents can also sign up for calls, email, and text alerts through the City’s CodeRed system.
During snow parking bans, parking will be available throughout the city in the following lots:

All vehicle owners must comply with the city ordinance by moving their vehicles out of designated municipal parking areas within two (2) hours after a parking ban is lifted. Failure to do so may result in towing and storage charges, as well as a fine of $100.
Sidewalks!
Additionally, according to the city ordinance, the owner, occupant, or responsible party is required to remove snow and ice from sidewalks intended for pedestrians no later than the first 12 hours of daylight following the end of a snowstorm. Violations of this requirement may incur fines starting at $25 for a first offense.

good for Pawtucket. North Providence, Johnston. Smithfield could use similar programs. While we got by the last 2 winters thanks to little snow, it seems sidewalks in those towns got little attention after what snow we had, making walking, accessing bus stops, schools, harder and less safe
