RIDOH Recommends Reopening the Swimming Areas at Oakland and Conimicut Beaches
The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) recommends reopening the swimming areas at Oakland Beach and Conimicut Beach in Warwick because bacteria counts have returned to safe levels.
RIDOH will continue to monitor and review beach water quality through Labor Day. The status of a beach may change as new data become available. The most up-to-date beach information is available through a recorded message on RIDOH’s beaches telephone line (401-222-2751). A list of closed beaches can also be accessed at https://health.ri.gov/beaches/

Worden Pond’s hydrilla problem is rapidly expanding
Treatment begins Friday at Worden Pond, South Kingstown, Rhode Island’s largest natural lake, and will be repeated periodically through November.
The significant numbers:
- Hydrilla now covers more than 225 acres, or about one-fifth of the 1,098-acre pond.
- That is up from 148 acres in 2024—a 52% increase in two years.
- Hydrilla was first found there only in 2023.
- The federal government supplied up to $500,000 for treatment.
- Approximately 17% of boats leaving Worden Pond had plants attached, creating an obvious risk of spreading hydrilla to other Rhode Island waters.
DEM says the EPA-approved herbicide will not harm fish or interfere with boating, fishing or swimming. The practical message is to clean every boat, trailer, paddle, anchor and fishing line before leaving. DEM announcement

48th Fools’ Rules Regatta — Saturday, Jamestown
Teams get two hours to construct boats from non-nautical materials at East Ferry Beach. Construction cannon at 9 a.m.; races begin at 11.
