On Friday, October 6, 2023, orthopedic surgeon Robert Marchand, MD of Ortho Rhode Island, completed the 1,000th joint replacement surgery performed at the Ortho RI Surgery Center in Warwick, RI. The procedure was a total knee arthroplasty, a surgery that resurfaces the damaged ends of the bones in the patient’s knee joint.

The Ortho RI Surgery Center, which has provided care since opening in 2021 at 300 Crossings Boulevard in Warwick, RI, is home to innovative, same-day orthopedic surgery for patients throughout southern New England. The completion of 1,000 joint replacements at the Surgery Center, which includes hip and shoulder replacements in addition to knee replacements, is Ortho Rhode Island’s latest achievement in its role as a leader in state-of-the-art orthopedics.

“Ortho Rhode Island is proud to serve our community’s orthopedic needs at the Ortho RI Surgery Center. The Center’s 1,000th total joint replacement is the result of our longstanding dedication to providing great patient experiences and outcomes for total joint replacement, using the latest technology in a safe, comfortable, and convenient outpatient setting,” said Ortho Rhode Island President and CEO Michael Bradley, MD, MBA, MS.

The Ortho RI Surgery Center’s milestone 1,000th joint replacement utilized innovative robotic-assisted Mako technology. Mako uses a 3D model of the patient’s anatomy to help create a personalized surgical plan. The surgeon then follows this plan in the operating room, while guiding Mako’s highly precise robotic arm.

Dr. Marchand is a pioneer of robotic-assisted orthopedic surgery, and recently completed his 9,000th Mako surgery. As one of the foremost robotic-assisted surgeons in orthopedics, he has contributed to the development and training of surgeons around the world. At Ortho Rhode Island, Dr. Marchand collaborates closely with a team of highly skilled robotic-assisted joint replacement surgeons that includes Dr. David Vegari, Dr. Jason Tartaglione, Dr. Peter Pizzarello Jr., Dr. Sidney Migliori, Dr. Michael Mason, Dr. Roald Llado, Dr. Andrew Kay, Dr. Nathan Howlett, Dr. David Burns, and Dr. Michael Bradley.

In addition to same-day joint replacement surgery, the Ortho RI Surgery Center provides outpatient surgeries in a variety of orthopedic subspecialties, including spine, sports medicine, hand and upper extremity, and foot and ankleOrtho Rhode Island surgeons complete more complex cases at partner hospitals, such as the Center for Advanced Orthopedic Surgery, a partnership with South County Health.
