Early Native Plant Sale TODAY
Today, May 7th from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. the Early Native Plant Sale, featuring spring ephemerals and early bloomers, will take place at Casey Farm in Saunderstown.
They specialize in plant species exclusive to the area known as ecoregion 59 which includes all of Rhode Island, most of Connecticut and Massachusetts and sections of New York, New Hampshire and Maine. Plants within an ecoregion are accustomed to similar environmental conditions, share plant genetics, and have co-evolved with our local fauna. They are best suited to thrive in your gardens and to attract and sustain the butterflies, bees, birds and other pollinators that depend on them.
Their plants come through their Seed Starters groups. Plants they buy are from sources that grow their plants from seeds as local as possible. For donated plants, they remove the soil from the roots, rinse the roots and then the plant is placed in a sterile potting medium as a precaution to minimize the spread of Asian jumping worms.
They specialize in plants native to Rhode Island and to the larger eco-region to which RI belongs. These wildflowers, grasses and shrubs have long adapted to, and thrive in our growing conditions. They support the local birds and insects that depend on them.
Their experts will help you select the plants most suitable for the specific growing conditions of your garden.
