Part 2: The “Big House” Transformation.
In our previous installment, we delved into constructing the foundation, emphasizing the importance of a robust core. This foundation is crucial for sustained fitness as you navigate gym sessions, classes, or solo workouts at home, especially as you age. Now, let’s focus on a key area we affectionately call the “Big House” – your posterior.
Traditionally, fitness enthusiasts have compartmentalized their workouts, adopting a bodybuilder mindset. While effective for certain goals, it may not equip you adequately for life’s unpredictable challenges. Consider the recent New England snowstorm, where the act of shoveling snow tested not just strength but functional fitness.
Coach Kearns addresses this by integrating leg workouts into the Burn with Kearns system, designed for functionality. Unlike the conventional approach of isolating muscle groups, our system engages the entire body simultaneously, promoting balanced development. This approach minimizes the risk of overusing the lower back during physically demanding tasks, like shoveling snow.
Recognizing the strength of the legs as a foundation, our workouts include exercises that simultaneously target multiple muscle groups. While traditional squats have their place, our focus is on holistic workouts that enhance overall functionality. We advocate for exercises like lunges and one-legged deadlifts, which not only build strength but also improve balance and activate the core.
Squats remain crucial, but lunges take precedence in our system due to their explosive nature, essential for reacting swiftly to unexpected situations. One-legged deadlifts, a personal favorite of Coach Kearns, not only provide single-leg work but also enhance balance and engage multiple joints and the core. Building a strong core remains the primary goal, followed closely by integrating lower body workouts with the rest of your body. Forget designated “leg days” or “upper body days”; every day becomes an opportunity to engage multiple muscle groups. This holistic approach aligns with the natural functioning of the human body, where every movement involves a coordinated effort.
