Burn with Kearns: Partner workouts for 40+ crowd. Fun, motivation, fitness – Kevin Kearns
by Kevin Kearns, contributing writer on exercise and fitness
It’s a matter of honor! Partner Workouts for the 40+ Crowd: Fun, Motivation, and Fitness
Getting in shape after 40 can be challenging, but having a workout buddy or joining a group can make a huge difference. It keeps you motivated, accountable, and makes exercising more enjoyable. When you commit to training with a friend, you’re more likely to stick with your program. Plus, working out with a partner can bring a new dynamic to your fitness routine. Sometimes, your best training partner might be right at home—yes, even your spouse or significant other.

The Value of Training Partners
Having training partners has been a game-changer for me. Each one brings something unique to the table, making every workout session different and exciting. There are days when I feel off and don’t want to train, and the same goes for my training partners. But we push each other to show up and give our best. It’s all about mutual motivation and support. It’s a matter of honor as well! You’ll show up when you have a training buddy because they will call you out and you won’t let them down)
Corporate Wellness
I and my team have had and still have the pleasure of working with many corporations presently and over the past 30 years. There were and are some key other benefits to training with fellow colleagues.
One of our programs called “White Collar Fight Club” is about teaching people ,in a controlled and safe setting , how to “hit” and “hold” focus mitts for boxing and muay thai. Not only did our average participant lose between 12-15 lbs over 3 months , the morale and camaraderie increased dramatically within the corporation! People were eating lunch together vs alone at their desk, they were more productive at work , and work more fluidly on projects together. One of the main reasons I observed this was the fact that they were all different levels of employees training together. From the CEO to the call center employees, no one was treated any differently during classes we operated. It was all about sweating and smiling together! No egos’ no attitudes. It was very a kin to the military concept of being “ all equal no matter your background” It was about TEAM work which makes dream work!

The other benefit to the corporation was the following. We had proven the model to the their insurance carrier with lower sick time loss, lower work related injuries, lowering health risk factors for employees such as cholesterol, BP, body mass index and alike. Their insurance carrier paid for our wellness sessions for the company! So now everyone wins. Companies like UPS, Pega Systems, Granite Telecomm and alike were and are saving money and increasing revenue with this model. https://youtube.com/shorts/M9SVQ1OQINE?feature=shared
The Exercises
Let’s dive into some exercises that work great with a partner. These routines are designed to improve strength and conditioning, and they can be adapted for any fitness level. Plus, they’re a lot of fun!
1. Who Owns the Bone
This exercise targets your core while working your upper body through a pulling motion.
- Step 1: Get into a push-up position with your partner.
- Step 2: Grab a resistance band with one hand while posting with the other.
- Step 3: Pull the band in a rowing motion, driving with your elbow.
Pro Tip: Work together to create greater resistance. Aim for 30 seconds on each side.
2. Thai Knees
This drill focuses on explosive mechanics in the hips and legs. It’s a great one-for-one drill where one person works while the other rests.
- Step 1: Have your partner wrap a resistance band around their waist.
- Step 2: Hold the band to create tension.
- Step 3: Your partner drives forward, performing knee strikes for 30 seconds, then switch roles.
Pro Tip: Ensure proper mechanics in the knee strikes to avoid injury.
The Benefits
Training with a partner isn’t just about fitness; it’s about building a routine and sticking to it. Top fighters like Spencer Fisher train with their spouses, not only to stay fit but also to maintain a healthy balance in their lives. Imagine the commitment required to not let your partner down—it adds an extra layer of motivation.
These exercises can be done almost anywhere and don’t require expensive equipment. At Burn with Kearns, we love taking our workouts outside, especially in warm weather. It’s a great way to enjoy the sun while getting fit.

Conclusion
For those over 40 looking to get in shape, partner workouts offer an excellent combination of motivation, fun, and fitness. They help you stay committed, push your limits, and keep your exercise routine exciting. Whether you’re working out with a friend or a spouse, the key is to support each other and make the experience enjoyable.
So grab a buddy, get a resistance band, and start incorporating these exercises into your routine. Remember, it’s not just about the workout—it’s about the journey and the relationships you build along the way. Happy training!
