ART! RISD SJP Chooses 2nd Anniversary of Massacre in Israel for Palestine-Themed Art Call Deadline

On the second anniversary of the Hamas massacre in Israel, the Rhode Island School of Design quietly extended a submission deadline for an art exhibition focused on “anti-imperialism and political resistance” to TODAY. The timing may draw strong reactions as an inappropriate and disrespectful to the victims and their families – on any day.
RISD was applauded for shutting down anti-Semitism demonstrations quickly and peacefully, while Brown University’s went on and on, with arrests and more. The President ended a 4-day takeover of a building by bringing expulsion to the consequences. And just like that, not only did the students come out of the building, but cleaned and repaired as much damage to it as they could.
Many campuses have banned or constrained SJP groups – such as Brandeis, Columbia, George Washington, UCLA, Univ. of Michigan, etc.  Brown University suspended their group in 2024.
Art should span political differences – but the lack of sensitivity to the times – as peace is literally at the forefront – and the October 7th deadline – means there is much work left to do.
In RISD SJP’s own words:
Art To Every Orange Tree: Call for Works

“Our promise to every orange tree on the land of Palestine. Our promise to every olive tree on the land of Palestine. Our promise to every sprout that grows on the land of Palestine: Our promise is to keep fighting. And fight. And then keep fighting. And keep fighting! For years. For decades. For centuries if necessary.” – Comrade George Habash [ * see bottom of page for Editor’s note ]

To Every Orange Tree addresses anti-imperialism and political resistance. It rejects monopoly capitalism, commits to decolonization, and mobilizes toward tangible power.

We, RISD Students for Justice in Palestine, are excited to be working with AS220 to remount To Every Orange Tree in the AS220 Empire St Gallery in November 2025. In addition to showing works from the previous iteration of the show at Carr Haus Cafe, we are excited to be featuring open call works from the Rhode Island Community.

*Editor’s Note: George Habash, known as “Comrade George,” was the founder of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) — a Marxist faction responsible for some of the most notorious acts of international terrorism in the late 1960s and 1970s. Under his leadership, the PFLP pioneered airplane hijackings, targeted civilians, and aligned with global militant movements that used violence to advance ideology. Habash openly justified armed struggle and the use of terror as a political weapon, earning the PFLP designation as a terrorist organization by the United States, European Union, and others.
