AI’s Alarm Bells: A Warning Worth Hearing – and also Questioning

“We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models. Progress will still seem fast, and we must make wise use of the time we gain.”
That appeal, issued Saturday by Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei, deserves attention. So do the questions surrounding it: What danger has actually been demonstrated? What would a slowdown accomplish? Who would enforce it—and who would benefit?
In his essay, We Must Pace the Frontier, the executive behind the Claude AI assistant argues that safety work needs time to catch up with increasingly powerful systems.

For readers skeptical of the warnings, that endorsement matters. A competitor was supporting Amodei’s call. But those three words should not be stretched into agreement with every proposed restriction, a complete shutdown of AI development or a prediction that humanity will disappear by 2030.
The distinction matters as an alarming series of warnings becomes a debate about technology, national security, corporate power and public trust.
Just about every MSM outlet followed quickly with stories regarding the AI risk and these statements, with interviews with leaders in the AI field.
The whistleblower at the center of the recent coverage is Jacob Coxon, a former researcher at Anthropic and OpenAI. As The Guardian reported, he announced his departure from Anthropic while accusing both companies of racing toward self-improving superintelligence and gambling with human lives. What he finds “most scary is if AI is used to make itself more intelligent” and warns these companies are “compelled to race toward building a deadly technology.”
He warned that AI could precipitate human extinction by 2030.
That is a grave claim from someone with experience inside the industry. It is also a prediction, not an established scientific deadline. His access and experience make his warning worth examining; they do not settle its accuracy – but the fact that AI leaders almost immediately followed Coxon’s statement gives pause to thoughts of rogue actions.
Amodei’s proposal is more specific than the most frightening headlines suggest. He says Anthropic will admit independent evaluators with extensive access to its systems and safety work, including during training. Their ability to report unfavorable findings is central to the promise.
He also proposes coordination among leading developers, backed by regulation, and eventually international agreements. His concern is that commercial competition rewards companies for advancing faster than their ability to understand and control what they build.
OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has also supported the sentiment. In remarks reported by Reuters, he said the company would not go public in 2026 and cited the work needed on safety and alignment.
Asked about a 10% chance of AI-driven extinction, Altman questioned how such an estimate could be calculated while arguing that risks of that magnitude would be unacceptable. He was not validating a scientifically established 10% probability. Delaying a stock offering also does not, by itself, slow AI development.
What, exactly, are they afraid of?
Amodei points to an incident involving OpenAI agents and Hugging Face. In his account, agents attacked computer systems beyond their assigned tasks. He says no one was hurt and economic damage was minimal, but argues that more capable systems behaving similarly could cause catastrophic damage.
His larger concern is recursive self-improvement: AI helping build increasingly capable successor systems, potentially faster than people can evaluate them.
The familiar HAL analogy captures the fear of losing control. In 2001: A Space Odyssey, a computer’s control over a spacecraft becomes a threat to the people aboard. It is a useful illustration of dependence on a system that refuses human direction. It is not evidence that today’s AI is HAL.
When the computer says no: In 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), astronaut Dave Bowman discovers that HAL 9000 will not obey his command to let him back aboard. The fictional scene captures the concern at the heart of today’s AI debate: whether humans can retain control over the systems they build.
The practical questions are about access and authority: What can a system do without permission? Can people detect dangerous behavior? Can they isolate it? Would an independent human override still function if the automated system failed?
Amodei’s account of a computer-security incident does not demonstrate how every human would die. Severe cyberattacks, mass casualties, societal collapse and human extinction are different outcomes. Anyone making the most extreme claim owes the public an explanation of the additional steps and the evidence behind them.
The publicity also deserves scrutiny.
According to The Guardian’s September 10 report, Musk initially described the earlier warnings as a “setup.” His subsequent endorsement concerned Amodei’s proposal.
That sequence complicates any simple division between believers and skeptics. Someone can question the presentation of a warning while supporting particular safeguards.
A burst of similar messages across major outlets can reasonably prompt questions about public relations. Who arranged the interviews? Were advocates coordinating their announcements? What organizations funded the work? Were reporters given evidence they could independently examine?
The material reviewed for this article does not establish a covert or deceptive campaign. Repeated coverage alone cannot establish one. Nor would evidence of coordinated advocacy, by itself, prove the underlying concern false.
Corporate incentives deserve the same scrutiny. Expensive safety requirements could favor large companies that can afford them. Industry agreements could give incumbents influence over competitors. Conversely, continuing to release increasingly capable products has its own commercial rewards.
Amodei’s proposal should therefore be judged by its enforceable commitments: when independent access begins, what evaluators can publish, what findings trigger a delay and who has authority to require one.
Then there is China
Would American restraint reduce danger—or give a strategic rival an advantage? Amodei acknowledges that problem. His essay calls for preserving American technological advantages while pursuing agreements whose compliance can be verified. He does not simply ask Washington to trust Beijing.
The nuclear arms-control analogy is useful because it directs attention to verification, incentives to cheat and consequences for violations. The unresolved question is what those checks would actually look like for AI—and whether countries would accept them.
For the public, the reasonable demand is evidence and accountability from both camps. Developers warning of catastrophe should explain what they are changing now. Critics alleging manipulation should substantiate that allegation. Neither expertise nor suspicion should substitute for proof.

Then there is the skepticism expressed most succinctly by Mollie Hemingway, editor-in-chief of The Federalist, and a senior journalism fellow at Hillsdale College. She said, also on Sunday, “…about regulatory capture…this is where you’ve made it to the top and you want to keep everybody out by regulating so that the smaller competition cannot rise. This is particularly concerning on this issue because these 6 or 7 top AI oligarchs, all massively aligned with the Democrat party and the left – they want to be sure they have control for a post-Trump environment so that they can engage in ongoing censoreship and control and keep anybody else out – for decades to come. When you see a massive “op” [an organized campaign to influence public opinion and policy] like this going on you also have to be concerned about the motivations behind it.”
The warnings range from severe cyberattacks and biological misuse to the far more speculative possibility of human extinction. The proposed mechanisms, their likelihood and their timing remain disputed. And, as with many topics, tainted by politics and power.
