OPEN TO THE PUBLIC- NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. – WOULD LOVE TO MEET MY RINEWSTODAY READERS!

In my most recent book, “A Memory of Elephants,” the use of the word “memory” is a double entendre. A group of elephants is referred to as a memory, and memory itself is associated with emotions.

I received dozens of questions about the book, as it defies categorization. Is it a children’s book?  Is it an adult book?  Or to be read by adults to children? Is it a grief book? Let’s hear from some of the reader’s responses from their five-star reviews!

Not Just a Children’s Book

“Having the honor of knowing Dr. Mari Nardolillo Dias, I can truly say she has an incredible presence and a deep passion for supporting others through bereavement and end-of-life care. Her work is her passion, and clearly part of her purpose, and it shines beautifully in this book. Her newest book, centered on children’s grief, is incredibly supportive and meaningful, and it’s not just for children, but for anyone navigating loss. It gently explores important themes such as how timing matters in grief and the impact of who shows up for us during our most vulnerable moments. What I love most about this book is the way the story is delivered, It’s simple, gentle, yet profoundly powerful. Through thoughtful words, beautiful illustrations, and intuitive insight, it creates a deeply moving experience for the reader. The discussion and reflection guide at the end is truly invaluable. Mari provides practical tools and thoughtful prompts that help adults support children, encourage meaningful conversations, and allow space for children to share their own interpretations and feelings.

Set in winter, the story uses a powerful metaphor of grief as a snowstorm. Like a storm, grief can build, feel overwhelming, and eventually pass allowing our path to become visible again. It beautifully reminds us that grief does not need to be fixed, that support is not one-size-fits-all, and that help may arrive in different ways at different times. It also highlights the power of presence and honors that growth through grief unfolds when we are ready.

I highly recommend this book, and not only for children, but for adults as well. It is a heartfelt and powerful resource that will support anyone on their grief journey. I am so excited to add this to Mari’s other books, which I proudly keep in my client’s waiting room.

Be sure to get your copy. You will not be disappointed.” (DS)

“I just had the privilege of reading Mari Nardolillo Dias’ book, “A Memory of Elephants “! I actually read it several times – I was in total awe of Mari’s ability to create this amazing story / subject line – pure genius! Mari’s experience in this field of “grief and dying” is second to none, and being able to convey such vital insight and guidance regarding this topic (which is sometimes taboo) is just phenomenal- the illustrations took my breath away in that – they went hand in hand with each written word. I love the reading guide she provided at the end of the book which can easily be followed by parents, teachers, and grief therapists alike. As an elderly widow, and still so fragile, I can relate to many of the points conveyed – grief cannot be rushed, it’s a personal process – it cannot be given a “time frame” – these truths pertain to grieving adults, but are just as valid for children of all ages who are in the throes of a tragedy. Working with children who have experienced loss has many challenges – “A Memory of Elephants “captures the essence of acceptance, love, and support for all of us who grieve! Thank you, Mari – you are a treasure and a gift for all of us whom you touch!”

“I was thankfully able to personally learn a lot directly from Mari over the years. Her first two literary works, Grief Speak V1 and2, were tailored more toward adults. This latest, A Memory of Elephants is a welcome addition for adults and children. Whether you are a parent, relative or friend of a child who has experienced loss, this book combines Mari’s unrivaled skill as a storyteller and natural ability to explain topics that are emotionally difficult to process in an exceedingly kind, gentle and effective way. Mari’s decades of experience weaves through this handsomely bound, expertly written and beautifully illustrated hardcover that can be passed from generation to generation. Having Mari “in the room” will foster an open dialog to navigate through one of the most challenging moments life will ever hand anyone at any age but especially during the critical years of childhood development. Ever the consummate professor Mari made sure A Memory of Elephants was compelling enough to become a favorite to read again and again. The last few pages are a menu of recommendations describing how to introduce the subject to the child: reading environment, key terms tied to the various animal characters and their emotions, questions to ask and points of reflection. Like any menu, you can choose everything or choose just the ones that suit you best and consume at your own pace. Mari’s voice clearly comes through in this page turning master class of life and death for both children and adults.” (RZ)

“As a grandparent, I find myself drawn to books that not only entertain but also gently pass along meaningful life lessons to younger generations. A Memory of Elephants by Mari Nardolillo Dias is one of those rare treasures that does exactly that.

Reading this story reminded me of the quiet but powerful role memory plays in our lives—how it connects us to the past, shapes our identity, and helps us nurture empathy for others. The imagery of elephants, known for their remarkable memories, is beautifully woven into a narrative that feels both tender and wise. It’s the kind of story that invites you to slow down and reflect, something I deeply appreciate in today’s fast-paced world.

What I especially loved is how accessible the message is for children yet layered enough for adults to appreciate. It opened the door for a meaningful conversation with my grandchildren about remembering loved ones, honoring experiences, and understanding emotions that aren’t always easy to express. The tone is gentle, comforting, and full of heart—perfect for bedtime reading or a quiet afternoon together. It’s a book that doesn’t just get read once and forgotten; it lingers, much like the memories it so lovingly celebrates.

I would wholeheartedly recommend A Memory of Elephants to fellow grandparents looking to share a story that is both touching and enduring. It’s a beautiful way to connect across generations and create a few cherished memories of your own along the way. (SG)

“This book is truly next level. It gently guides children through the complex experience of grief in a way that feels natural and comforting. What surprised me most is how much it speaks to adults, too—maybe even more so. It highlights just how differently children process loss compared to adults, and there’s something powerful in that perspective. A meaningful read for all ages”
