The Miriam Hospital to replace 100+ year old building. New emergency dept, inpatient units.
The Miriam Hospital Secures Approval for Renovation Project
The Miriam Hospital will update both the emergency department (ED) and the hospital’s inpatient units with critical upgrades to meet the growing needs of our community.
The Hospital has received Certificate of Need (CoN) approval based on a recommendation of the Health Services Council to the Department of Health (DOH) for the extensive renovation project that will “transform patient care and enhance the hospital’s infrastructure”.
“Receiving this approval marks a crucial step forward in our steadfast commitment to delivering exceptional patient care and advancing medical excellence,” said Maria Ducharme, president and chief quality executive, Brown University Health. “Our current building, now over 100 years old, can no longer adequately support the demands of modern patient care. In addition, our emergency department is a fragmented space that no longer supports efficient patient flow and the highest levels of communication we strive to deliver to those who have come to rely on us for their care. These much-needed renovations will create a safe, comfortable, environment that prioritizes the health and well-being of our community.”

Phased in construction
Work is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2025 and will be carried out in three phases over 3 years. This phased approach is designed to minimize disruptions to ongoing patient care and the surrounding communities. The first phase will involve demolishing the hospital campus’s oldest building to create space for a new emergency department and private patient rooms. The renovation project has an estimated cost of $125 million for completion, the majority to be funded through a centennial capital fundraising campaign, currently in its beginning phase.
“As a cornerstone of our community, The Miriam Hospital has always been committed to delivering exceptional care. This investment reflects Brown University Health’s unwavering dedication to modernizing our facilities, advancing healthcare and improving outcomes for everyone we serve” Stated John Fernandez, president and CEO, Brown University Health.
Key components of the renovation project include:
- Increased Privacy: The hospital’s licensed bed capacity will remain the same, but renovations will allow for more private patient rooms, improved infection control measures, and an environment conducive to recovery.
- New Emergency Department: Designed with an emphasis on efficiency and patient flow, the new emergency department will minimize wait times and streamline critical care processes and provider communication.
- Enhanced Geriatric Care: Designed with an emphasis on elements to help achieve goal of becoming one of only a few emergency departments in New England to be geriatric accredited.
This project underscores The Miriam Hospital’s dedication to continuous improvement and its mission to provide compassionate, high-quality healthcare.
