Burn with Kearns: Thanksgiving weekend, a time for family, gratitude, and balance – Kevin Kearns

by Coach Kevin Kearns, contributing writer on fitness, exercise

Thanksgiving is one of the most cherished times of the year—a day to reconnect with family, celebrate gratitude, and share in the warmth of a delicious meal. However, it’s also a time when the joy of the holiday can sometimes lead to overindulgence. At Burn with Kearns, we believe in living life to its fullest, but with balance and intention. This Thanksgiving, let’s embrace the holiday spirit while staying aligned with principles that keep us feeling strong, healthy, and connected.

1. Embrace the Joy of Connection

The heart of Thanksgiving is spending time with the people who matter most. Whether you’re swapping stories around the dinner table or tossing a football in the yard, prioritize moments that create lasting memories. The connection we share with loved ones is more nourishing than anything on the table.

2. Enjoy, Don’t Overdo

Thanksgiving isn’t about deprivation; it’s about mindful enjoyment. Sample all your favorite dishes, but listen to your body. Fill your plate with a balance of proteins, vegetables, and the traditional sides you love. Savor each bite—slowing down to enjoy your meal can help prevent that post-dinner lethargy.

Remember the Burn with Kearns philosophy: moderation, not elimination. A small slice of pie shared with family feels more rewarding than overindulging in the whole thing.

3. Keep Moving

Staying active is a cornerstone of physical and mental wellness, even on Thanksgiving. Before the big meal, why not organize a family activity? A brisk morning walk, a playful game of touch football, or even a quick bodyweight workout in the living room can energize everyone and make the feast feel even more rewarding.

If you’re traveling or don’t have equipment, Burn with Kearns’ “fitness anywhere” principles apply:

• 20 squats, 15 push-ups, 10 burpees, repeat 3 times.

• Or, create a fun movement game for the kids while the turkey roasts.

. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Amid all the rich food and drinks, don’t forget about water. Staying hydrated keeps your energy levels steady and aids digestion. Start your day with a tall glass of water and keep sipping throughout the festivities. A simple reminder to drink water can make a huge difference in how you feel.

5. Prioritize Gratitude

Taking a moment to reflect on what you’re thankful for is what makes Thanksgiving special. Whether it’s family, health, or personal achievements, gratitude is a powerful tool for mental well-being. Share your gratitude aloud at the table to set a positive tone for everyone.

6. Don’t Forget Recovery

After the festivities, give your body time to recover. A short evening walk can help digestion, or some light stretching can ease any post-meal sluggishness. And, if you feel the need for a reset the next day, a Burn with Kearns high-energy workout can help you refocus and revitalize.

7. Involve the Kids

Instill healthy traditions in the next generation. Let the kids help set the table, prepare a healthy dish, or join in a pre-dinner workout. Teaching them to balance enjoyment with self-care is a gift they’ll carry forward.

The Burn with Kearns Philosophy: Living Life in Balance

At Burn with Kearns, we’re not about restricting life’s pleasures—we’re about creating a lifestyle where joy and health coexist. This Thanksgiving, celebrate the abundance in your life without sacrificing the habits that make you feel your best.

So, dig into your turkey, laugh until your stomach hurts, and move a little to balance it all out. Let this Thanksgiving remind us all that the best “fuel” isn’t just the food on the table—it’s the love, gratitude, and connections that nourish our spirit.

From the Burn with Kearns family to yours, have a Happy Thanksgiving!
