Senior Agenda Coalition conference: Resources on social security, healthcare, housing, economy
Social Security, Healthcare, Housing, and the Economy are on the minds of older adults and the topic of discussions at many kitchen tables across the Ocean State. The Senior Agenda Coalition’s 16th Annual Conference in October will provide expert speakers, resources, and partners to share knowledge on these issues to help you build that Bridge to a Secure Future.
The Conference and Expo will be held October 9, 2024, from 7:30 AM to 12 noon at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick, RI. Breakfast begins at 7:30 AM as does networking with dozens of exhibitors showcasing services and information focused on older adults. Headlining the conference as keynote speaker is United States Senator, Sheldon Whitehouse. Senator Whitehouse will bring a beltway update and outlook for many programs which directly impact Rhode Island’s older adults and adults with disabilities, including Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, and Housing.
The invited Conference panelists include presentations by Congressman Seth Magaziner on the economics of aging. Rhode Island’s Attorney General Peter Neronha, on the state of health care in Rhode Island and Julie Leddy, the President of the Public Housing Authorities RI (PHARI) and Executive Director for the Coventry Housing Authority on the success and challenges of developing more housing opportunities, and safely housing more older adults and those with disabilities. This year’s conference will also include a robust Q&A session with our presenters to ensure that everyone will have an opportunity to voice their questions on these vital issues.
Carol Anne Costa, Executive Director of the Senior Agenda Coalition of Rhode Island, notes, “It is no secret that older adults and adults with disabilities are facing unique and complicated challenges surrounding healthcare and sources of income, often while carrying the burden of nonviable housing options. And let’s face it, the rumblings on Capitol Hill threatening to gut Social Security and Medicare should be taken seriously.”
Maureen Maigret, SACRI Policy Advisor, is passionate about stressing the importance of continuing effective policy and advocacy work needed to achieve an improved quality of life for all Rhode Island’s older adults.
Diane Santos, SACRI Board Chair, said “We are facing a time of great uncertainty and SACRI’s dedication to continue its mission to educate, advocate, organize and legislate is more important than ever. Our October conference is an excellent opportunity for you to learn more about our work. I encourage you to register for the conference and let us help you build A Bridge to a Secure Future.”

About SACRI
The Senior Agenda Coalition is an independent and diverse coalition of agency and individual members. Our mission is to mobilize people to implement an agenda that improves the quality of life of older Rhode Islanders and adults with disabilities. We accomplish this through community organizing, public education, advocacy, and legislative action.
I find it very disappointing that the Senior Agenda (which I started together with Richard Bidwell, Leader of the R. I. Gray Panthers) has not advocated or supported efforts and legislation to restore the COLAs for teachers and state/municipal workers/ retirees that were contracted with the State of Rhode Island. The average pension was approximately $25, 000 per year and teachers were mot enrolled in the Social Security Program. Retirees have lost there homes, lost any savings they had managed to scrap together and many now live in poverty. The Senior Agenda has also not supported the effort to not tax elder’s Social Security. These Conferences are showboating events to highlight and profile the organization participants and ignore the real plight of elders in the community.
