Did you know?

Over 80 percent of all disabled veterans do not qualify for dental services with the VA.Over 80% of veterans don’t qualify for dental coverage.

We start off with a question from one of our readers.

Q:  Am I eligible for VA dental care if I am receiving 90 percent monthly VA disability? Jean, Woonsocket.

Answer: To be eligible for VA dental care, you must be receiving 100% VA monthly disability or if any portion of your 30 percent combined rating includes a diagnostic code for jaw, mouth, or teeth conditions.

Additionally, veterans active participants in the Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E / Chapter 31) and veterans enrolled in a VA homeless program could qualify for VA dental care under Class V eligibility.

However, unlike veterans rated at 100% disability, dental coverage for VR&E participants is limited to specific circumstances. A VA dental care provider must determine that the dental treatment is necessary to achieve one or more of the following goals:

• Program Entry: Enable you to start or enter into your employment plan.
• Program Continuation: Prevent an interruption of your VR&E training or help you stay active in the program.
• Program Return: Hasten your return to active status if you had to pause training (in “interrupted,” “leave,” or “discontinued” status) due to a dental issue, injury, or medical condition.
• Employment & Independence: Help you obtain, adjust to, or maintain employment during your employment assistance period, or achieve full independence in daily living.

How to Access VR&E Dental Benefits

1. Contact Your VR&E Counselor: Inform your Veteran Readiness Counselor (VRC) that you need dental treatment to complete your program or maintain your studies/training.
2. Obtain a Referral: Your counselor will coordinate with a VA dental clinic by submitting a formal referral/authorization.
3. VA Dental Evaluation: A VA dental clinician will review your case to confirm that the requested dental work directly supports your rehabilitation plan goals.

Direct VA Dental Care (Class-Based Eligibility)

You may be eligible for full or limited VA-provided dental care if you meet any of the following criteria:

• Service-Connected Dental Condition: If part of your 30% rating is specifically for a dental, oral, or jaw disability (e.g., jaw injury, trauma, or tooth loss from service), you qualify for comprehensive dental care to treat and maintain your oral health.
• Impact on a Service-Connected Health Condition: If a dental condition directly aggravates or negatively impacts another service-connected disability (for example, severe gum issues complicating service-connected diabetes), the VA may cover dental care to resolve the issue.
• Vocational Rehabilitation (VR&E / Chapter 31): If you are actively participating in the VA’s Veteran Readiness and Employment program, you may receive dental care if needed to complete your training or gain employment.
• Recent Discharge: If you were discharged within the last 180 days and did not receive a complete dental exam prior to release, you may be eligible for a one-time course of free dental treatment.

VA Dental Insurance Program (VADIP)

Because you are enrolled in VA health care with a service-connected disability rating, you are eligible to purchase discounted dental insurance through VADIP.

• Providers: Delta Dental and MetLife offer reduced-rate plans specifically for eligible veterans.
• Coverage: Includes cleanings, exams, X-rays, fillings, root canals, crowns, and oral surgery at negotiated group rates.
• Cost: You pay a monthly premium, co-pays, and deductibles depending on the plan level chosen (Standard or Comprehensive).

1. Check Your Rating Details: Verify if any portion of your 30% combined rating includes a diagnostic code for jaw, mouth, or teeth conditions. To check or set-up a dental appointment call the VA Dental Clinic, (401) 273-7100 and ask for the dental clinic.

Free Dental Care for Veterans

Aspen Dental offers free dental care to veterans, but specifically through their annual Day of Service program rather than year-round complimentary care.

Aspen Dental Day of Service

• Event Date: Scheduled for November 7, 2026 at participating locations.
• What is Covered: Free single-day treatment focused on urgent dental needs (such as exam/X-rays, fillings, extractions, basic cleanings, or denture repairs).
• Eligibility: Open to any veteran with proof of service (such as a DD-214 or Veteran ID card).
• Appointments & Registration: Registration and scheduling open on September 29, 2026. Appointments are required, limited, and fill up quickly.You can register for notifications and book online through Aspen Dental Day of Service or by calling 1-844-ASPEN-HMM.

Year-Round Veteran Discounts

For dental needs outside of the free event date, Aspen Dental partners with veterans’ organizations to offer year-round savings:

Hooves and Hospitality: A Uniquely Burrillville Veteran Breakfast

The monthly free breakfast hosted by the Landing Zone Bronco Veteran and First Responder Resource Center,  is always a highlight for local service members and their guests, offering hot food, warm camaraderie, and good conversation. A few days ago, however, the gathering featured an unforgettable entrance that had everyone talking.

As attendees gathered for their morning coffee, excitement spread through the crowd when a fellow veteran trotted up to the center on a mule. Laughter, cheers, and broad smiles lit up the parking lot as veterans stepped outside to greet the unexpected four-legged guest. Heads turned, cameras came out, and the unique arrival instantly added an extra spark of joy and community spirit to the morning.

Only in Burrillville, Rhode Island, does a veteran roll up to breakfast on a mule!

The Landing Zone Bronco Veteran and First Responder Resource Center hosts its free breakfast for veterans and their guests on the 2nd Tuesday of every month from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.Whether arriving by car, truck, or mule, all veterans are welcome to join in on the food and fellowship.

Landing Zone Bronco (“LZ Bronco”) Veteran and First Responder Resource Center- September 2026,  250^th Celebration Schedule

Throughout the month of September  LZ Bronco Veteran and First Responder Resource Center, 1950 Bronco Highway, Harrisville RI will be offering veterans FREE ice cream and hotdogs on select Sundays.

The location offers plenty of outdoor and indoor sitting. Although the facility currently is not open to the public on a daily basis, however, the resource center will be opened every Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m throughout the month of September  for veterans and first responders who would like to stop by and learn more information on their benefits, or need assistance with VA, federal, state and or local benefits.

The veteran organization is seeking sponsors for remaining Sundays in September. Sponsors are also encouraged to be “ice cream scoopers” and “dessert servers” during the Sunday their organization or family sponsored.

Gold sponsorship . Suggested is $250 for a Sunday. Italian American War Veterans of US (ITAM) Volunteer Opportunities:

Leave No Veteran Alone Program (https://italianamericanwarveteran.org)     – Monday and Saturday, ITAM seeks volunteers to meet up at designated nursing homes to meet and socialize with veterans living at the facility. We schedule the facilities 30 to 60 days in advance. Information on the National Desert Shield and Storm Memorial

The Desert Shield and Desert Storm Memorial is a new national monument to be built at the National Mall in Washington D.C.The groundbreaking ceremony occurred on July 14, 2022.

Although we have been constructing the various elements of the memorial off-site for several years, on-site construction has begun.  The dedication will be October 24, 2026.

National Desert Storm and Desert Shield War Memorial Act – Authorizes the National Desert Storm Memorial Association to establish a commemorative work on federal land in the District of Columbia to commemorate and honor those who, as members of the Armed Forces, served on active duty in support of Operation Desert Storm or Operation Desert Shield.

Construction of the Memorial is led by the National Desert Storm Memorial Association, a 501(c)3 organization in Washington, D.C. The association is led by a Board of Directors comprised of veterans who served during Operation Desert Storm. Veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness-and their family members, friends, and supporters-can make the call to or chat online with the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans, where trained counselors are ready to talk confidentially 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Free Rhode Island Hunting and Fishing Licenses for 100% Disabled Veterans:

A Veteran who has a 100% disability rating from the VA is eligible for free Rhode Island hunting and fishing licenses.

No cost licenses are available if you are:

• over 65 AND a Rhode Island resident
• a veteran with 100% disability status from the Department of Veterans Affairs
• a person with 100% total disability status from the Social Security Administration

To apply in person at DEM, please bring a photo ID and an ORIGINAL DOCUMENT OF THE FINAL DECISION(S). Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. (directions)

To apply by mail, please complete an application and mail the application and a copy of your photo ID and the ORIGINAL DOCUMENT OF THE FINAL DECISION(S). Please allow two weeks for processing. Free Rhode Island State Park Passes for 100% Disabled Veterans:

Rhode Island offers the State Park Disability Pass for use at any state-owned recreational facility to disabled Veterans who have a 100% service-connected disability rating from the VA.

The State Park Disability Pass authorizes free admission and parking but does not exempt the following:

• Licensing fees
• Camping fees
• Picnic table fees
• Specialized facility use fees
• Use of equestrian areas
• Performing art centers
• Game fields fees
• Mule shed fees

If the disabled Veteran cannot drive, the vehicle transporting the Veteran will not be charged.

Veterans must apply in person at the Rhode Island State Parks and Recreation Headquarters and are required to show official documentation (dated within the past year) from the VA that states they have a 100% service-connected disability.
