Burn with Kearns: Unveiling Part 3 of our blueprint: A New Year’s resolution for a healthier you – Kevin Kearns
by Kevin Kearns, contributing writer on exercise, fitness and health
In this segment, we delve into the significance of maintaining a robust lower back, especially for individuals aged 40 and above . The lower back is a crucial component of the core, and as we age, it becomes susceptible to common injuries.
The key question is: How can we ensure the health and vitality of our lower back? Moreover, how do we sustain its strength and flexibility over time? Fortunately, there are practical steps and exercises that, when incorporated into a regular routine, contribute to the longevity and well-being of your lower back.
One highly effective exercise for lower back strength and health revolves around rotation—a fundamental element among the eight components of fitness. These elements, including push, pull, level, change, rotation, locomotion, flexibility, and static strength, play a pivotal role in our daily movements.
The lower back necessitates the ability to rotate, maintain static strength and position, and exhibit flexibility and stability. Among the myriad exercises available, rotational movements stand out as one of the most powerful for lower back health.
Engaging in rotational exercises activates the transverse plane and, concurrently, the transverse abdominis—the internal weightlifting belt. This muscle, though thin as paper, serves as a crucial support structure for your core. Unfortunately, many exercises neglect to activate this internal weightlifting belt.
Our recommended exercises, including medicine ball twists, diagonal medicine ball chops, and classic abdominal bicycles, are designed to specifically activate your transverse abdominis. Whether utilizing equipment or opting for equipment-free variations, these exercises are unconventional yet highly effective in promoting lower back strength and overall fitness.
In a short video, we demonstrate these exercises, ensuring that you have options whether you prefer using equipment or not. Despite their unconventional nature, these exercises have proven instrumental in helping our clients and athletes maintain strength and fitness as they age.
These often-overlooked muscles come into play in everyday scenarios, such as carrying groceries upstairs, changing a tire on the side of the road, or climbing stairs with your children. Strengthening your lower back is essential for these seemingly mundane yet significant activities. Invest in your lower back health with the Burn With Kearns System and experience the transformative impact on your overall well-being.
