Burn with Kearns: No BS. Solution to your New Year’s resolution – Kevin Kearns
by Kevin Kearns, contributing writer on exercise and fitness
Now, I could sell you on my services. That would be perfectly acceptable. Right now for the next few days you’re going to get bombarded with all these promises about how to get into the best shape of your life, lose 20 pounds overnight, and this, that, and the other thing. And, some of them may work in the short term, but they rarely work in the long term. Hence, that is the problem – they are short term solutions to a long-term challenge.
We see the biggest increases in personal training, gym membership, increases in classes, and alike, during the first part of the year. Everybody’s motivated to start on January 1, but nine times out of 10 I hate to tell you what happens within 6 to 8 weeks. It’s been studied that most people drop off, and actually, about 98% of those who started with this “get fit” resolution on January 1 will drop out. This is why gym memberships are $9.95 per month because they don’t want you to come to the gym. Seriously they don’t want you there! If everybody came to the gym that was paying $9.95 per month the gym would explode, which it usually does on the first of the year, but unfortunately, by February 1 it dies out again.
So, what is a person to do? How do you lose weight, how do you lose fat, how do you stay in shape for the upcoming year, two years, and for decades after that?
Well, I’m going to tell you! I will let you in on a little secret. It’s what we call the Burn With Kearns C’s and the 3-D:
Commitment and consistency, desire, dedication, and discipline.
The last one is probably the most important. Discipline is necessary to reach your goals. Whatever that is, whether it’s 20, 30, 40, or 100 pounds. You have to have a commitment, and then you have to have the discipline and the drive to continue going forward no matter what happens. How do I know this? It’s simple. I probably have trained over 10,000 people over the past four decades. That’s right, for decades! Also I’ve trained me over the past four decades to stay in the best shape, mentally and spiritually every day. Is it easy? Hell no, it’s not easy. Is it worth it? You better believe it! it’s something really simple that the great Zig Ziglar said. Ziglar was one of the best motivational speakers, ever – “You don’t pay the price for staying in shape; you enjoy the benefits of staying in shape.”
Now, what are some of those benefits?
This simple:
- Increase overall well-being. What does that mean? An overall sense of accomplishment in centeredness in yourself.
- Increase productivity at work and at home.
- Here is a big one – sexual function. You heard me, yes, exercise does make sex better, so, let’s face facts.
- Increase longevity and lifespan. What does lifespan mean? Better quality of life while you are living it.
- Improve tolerance to stress. That’s another big one exercise helps. Eliminate the stress hormones that we normally get when we’re under stress.
- Improve confidence. When we feel we look better, we feel better. It’s that simple. Who doesn’t like putting on their favorite jeans, and they still fit, or even they’re a little loose.
- Decrease the aging process. It has been proven. If you don’t move, you don’t improve. Most people when they retire don’t last that long because their mind and body are not active and they become sedentary.
So then, Coach Kearns, how do I get in shape – and stay in shape? Here’s the big pearl of wisdom from someone who has been working out for 44 years, now, faithfully. HERE IT IS:
CONSISTENT FOLLOW THROUGH!!!!!! You have to get sick and tired of being sick and tired, literally. Now, there will be days that you won’t want to go to class, get on the treadmill, go to yoga, or lift those weights. Those are the days, my friends, that count the most. I’ll let you in on a little secret, we all have them, and that includes me! Every time that happens to me, I say this to myself, “is there anything else that is going to make me feel this good, this accomplished, and decrease my stress level as much as this workout?” This pushes me forward. The other concept that will work is get a training partner or join a class, and get to know your classmates. As we have said in martial arts for years, “relationships built on the mat or in the dojo last a long time.” Why? Because you have sweated together, you have pushed each other, and you have worked together. I have several training partners. Why? Because if I’m thinking “I don’t want to do this today! But I can’t let Eric down, or Mark, or one of my other training partners.” It becomes a matter of honor!
With classes, it becomes a close-knit community. This is never more evident to me in martial arts or yoga classes. I myself have been doing yoga at Woods Yoga in Lincoln. I have consistently been at Sunday “Over Easy” at 930 am on Sundays for 3 years now.
At the end of the day when those workouts are the toughest, remember this “You are Stronger THAN YOU THINK YOU ARE!”
Keep Pushing!
Keep Grinding!
And you’ll get there!
