Burn with Kearns: Suspension Training on Steroids – Kevin Kearns

You have to love the personal training and coaching community. They come out with a great product like the TRX. Then fitness people play around with it and come up with something like the Air Fit from Purmotion. Then someone really takes a leap and combines 2 fitness products together. This  someone (Kieren Owen from KO8) brings together suspension training and resistance band training one! One word for trainers like me that travel BRILLIANT…

Combining elements that are both flexible and functional is simply a masterpiece. At Burn With Kearns we look at that and say, WE WANT IT NOW!  I was fortunate enough to get my hands on this piece of kit and to say the least I was impressed right away. The more you can change on the fly with a product especially when working with athletes like fighters is huge. When training for a fight in  later stages you need to be able to move the athlete quickly and seamlessly. Why?   Because that is what they will be facing in the cage. Someone is not going to wait for you in  fight! You need to be able to react and act quickly. This kit fits the bill and then some. So, here’s a little kick ass workout for you!

We going to really crush this one, so be ready. We are going to push this to the max and then some. This will show you the ease in flexibility you have from going from one movement to another. Each movement will be 45 seconds each with 0 rest between each drill. This what we call the “KO8 Mass Attack” – overwhelm your opponents with this one.

  1. Ground and pound with the bands – with the resistance set kneel on the ground and perform straight punches
  2. Knee blast – with your training partner holding pads or a heavy bag have the resistance bands set your ankles. No let the knees start a flying as you alternate knee shots
  3. explosive band twists low – with the band at a low angle and your body parallel to the band explosive twist from right to left side
  4. explosive inverted rows – with the bands in suspension position. explode upward as you let go of the handles briefly
  5. mountain climbers – with the feet anchored in the bands perform alternating mountain climbers
  6. Fit to fight – with bands loop on the shoulders start throwing multiple combinations into pads or shadow box
  7. Push twist  – with your hands in the suspension handles perform a push up with a twist. Elevate one leg for a core killer
  8. Punch to sprawl – with your hands in the bands throw 2 punches and the drop with the handles into a sprawl
  9. Float knees – with your feet in the suspension loops start driving your knee to the outside elbow

There you have it – the “KO 8” suspension trainer. This is definitely a kit worth it for the toolbox.
