Ron & Jen’s Great Escape: 8-31-22 – Ron St. Pierre and Jen Brien

by Ron St. Pierre and Jen Brien, commentary

THE HEART OF “MAN”

What does your heart look like? Is it pliable and sweet, or angry and hardened?! It’s an awfully personal question, but it’s very important that we look at who we are these days and figure out who we want or don’t want to be.

There’s a lot of folk asking for help with various things and it’s up to us as people who want to do good, and be good, that we give what we can.

For the record, I’m not talking student loans. That’s a whole other kettle of fish. I’m talking about friends or neighbors, mostly strangers, putting their hands out and saying, “help me”. We will all be asked to give a little more at some point in some way. It could be our time, our finances, food, clothes whatever… 2 years ago, the commercials told us “we are all in this together”. We really are. Just a gentle reminder from your pal, Jen.

Till next week my friends – Jen

DEBUNKING TRADITION

I’ve always wondered where the fashion tradition of putting away white clothing after Labor Day originated. Seems its origin is pomposity at its best. The tradition began in the 1800’s and its origins are a tad cringeworthy. The “rule” was invented in the 19th century by an elite group as a way to use fashion to separate those with money from those without. To distinguish the elite from the “hoi polloi”. When the summer months were over, affluent residents would leave the city for warmer vacation spots. Wearing white represented that you could afford to get out of the city and vacation elsewhere when summer ended. So, since Labor Day typically represents the end of summer, a “rule” was established that you shouldn’t wear white after Labor Day if you didn’t have the scratch to take fall and winter vacations. Such snobbery!

BIG MOVES BY THE PEACOCK NETWORK COMING?

There’s some big buzz about possible changes at NBC. First, the network is supposedly considering cutting one hour of its prime time schedule due to streaming, and giving the 10 to 11pm Eastern Time hour to local affiliates. Also, the network’s considering making a change with MEET THE PRESS which has watched its ratings drop 21%, and key ad demo down 24% this year, to date. Question is will the network have the testicular fortitude to admit the root of the demise could be the face of the show, Chuck Todd?
