Friday Fishing Tips, 6/10/2022 – Jeff Gross
by Jeff Gross, contributing writer
After a 2-year hiatus due to COVID, the Rhode Island Fish and Game Protective Association and the Rhode Island DEM are proud to announce the 2022 Trout Fishing Derby. Children will be fishing for Rainbow Trout in the club’s trout pond at 254 Sharpe Street, West Greenwich, RI. Bring your fishing equipment and bait for your children. Registration is at 9:30 am with the Derby starting at 10 am sharp. Trophies will be awarded at the RIFGPA’s September 9th 7:30 meeting. There are 2 divisions Boys and Girls. A trophy is awarded for each of the categories – 1st trout, largest trout and most trout. The event is catch and release, please. Food will be available for a donation if one is hungry afterward. Parents or Guardians will be asked to sign a consent form as pictures will be taken and displayed on RINewsToday.com and the RI DEM’s web pages. Here is hoping mother nature keeps the rain away.
While this writer was enjoying some splendid weather and great fishing in Maine, RI fishers were hammering the freshwater bass and stripers to boot. There must be something in the air. Tip: IF one sees Damsel flies bouncing and whirling around the water surface like a couple 2-stepping to country music one can be sure there are no fish there. This writer would relocate to the other side of the pond and it would be hammer time with some kind of fish on the line at least every other cast if not more. Use the insects as a guide. If nothing is bothering them, then the fish are elsewhere.
While all these insects can be great indicators of fish location, the bugs can be a real nuisance when one is powering along in a bass boat. At 6’3” the boat gunnels and seats are much lower, so the face becomes a target. Speeding along at 20 knots combined with the insects’ speed of 10 knots the collision with one’s face is at 35 mph. Comparable to getting hit in the face with a paint ball and no mask. There are some very large bugs flying at dusk in Maine to boot. Tip: wear the sunglasses/glasses well after sundown, as at 35 mph one can be temporarily blinded or worse by the flying critters.
See you at the Derby!
