“Ron & Jen’s Great Escape” – 10-13-2021 – Ron St. Pierre & Jen Brien
Haunting E-Mails
’Tis the season for haunting. Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden resigned this week after e-mails from 2011 to 2018 surfaced in which he used racist, homophobic and misogynistic language. An e-mail from a decade ago used racist language about NFL players’ union head DeMaurice Smith, who is black, saying he has “lips the size of Michelin tires.” Before Gruden could utter the “that was a decade ago and I’ve changed” defense, more recent e-mails surfaced saying the NFL Comish, Roger Goodell, shouldn’t have pressured the Rams to draft, quote, “queers” referring to Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team. Gruden’s resignation statement claimed “I’m sorry, I never meant to hurt anyone. I had no racial intention with those remarks at all. I’m not like that at all.”
Sorry, coach… err, former coach… we beg to differ.
Buy Early and Often
Amazon is apparently trying to avoid supply chain issues early by offering BLACK FRIDAY worth deals NOW. The online retail giant announced Epic deals with deep discounts in every category, including its own devices. On select days throughout this month and November, Amazon says brands including Apple, KitchenAid, Hasbro, Sony, and Bose will offer limited time deep discounts.
New Thanksgiving Traditions?
A Jennie-O One Poll (they’re the folks who make Turkey products) asked people what they think Thanksgiving will be like the year. 62% say it will be “close to normal” while 57% are looking at video chats for family gatherings. Those polled also think the pandemic will motivate folks to cook more dishes for the day and being adventurous in food choices is apparently a new trend. Sorry, but we’re not adventurous enough to reach for the dreaded Green Bean Casserole or Ambrosia Salad.
A Sign of the Times
A new CBS News poll finds most Americans haven’t handwritten a letter on paper in more than 5 years… OR, never have.
Trick or Treat Eats
If you want to know what Trick or Treaters want the most, the fav candy in RI is a TWIX bar. However, Instacart doesn’t rank TWIX in its top 7 most sought after delights. Peanut M&Ms come in at number 1, followed by plain M&Ms, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Hershey’s Milk Chocolate, Twizzlers, Snickers, and Kit Kat. Somehow the dreaded Candy Corn slides in at number 8.
