Hamantash – hidden sweetness

There are many stories about the etiology of these delightful sweets – but one morsel we liked is that an insight points to the fact that the filling is hidden inside the dough. In earlier times, it is said that Jewish people were accustomed to experiencing open miracles. In exile, they don’t necessarily experience openly revealed miracles anymore. Nevertheless, the Purim story shows that this does not mean that they’ve been abandoned. On the contrary, G-d is ever present. He’s just operating in a behind-the-scenes fashion, just as the filling of the hamantash is hidden within the dough.

What is Purim?

Purim is a Jewish holiday, literally a Festival of Lots, commemorating the saving of the Jewish people from Haman, a Perisan Empire official who was planning to kill them, as recounted in the Book of Esther.

According to the Scroll of Esther, this should be a time of “feasting and gladness, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor.” Purim is celebrated among Jews by:

  • Exchanging gifts of food and drink
  • Donating charity to the poor
  • Eating a celebratory meal
  • Public recitation of the Scroll of Esther, usually in synagogue
  • Reciting additions to the daily prayers and the grace after meals

Other customs include wearing masks and costumes, public celebrations and parades, and eating hamantashen (“Haman’s pocket”). Drinking wine in celebration is not discouraged.
