Splittin’ the Atom with Jen Brien — Commentary, July 2, 2026
by Jennifer Brien, contributing writer, commentary
THE BEAUTIFUL, MESSY, UNAPOLOGETIC GLORY OF THE AMERICAN EXPERIMENT
Let’s be honest: being an American right now feels a bit like being trapped inside a 24-hour reality TV show where the writers have completely lost the script. We are loud, divided, we argue over ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING, and our political landscape routinely looks like a demolition project.
No matter which day of the week you take a peek at the news through your fingers because your hands are hiding your face in fear, it seems as though the whole experiment is about to go “UP IN SMOKE”. Yep, Joy Reid clenches her fists, Democrats are blaming TRUMP for cows farting in North Dakota and rich angry white liberals are trying to tell us all how WONDERFUL socialism really is. Tragic…
But the thing is gang… all these crazies, cynics and naysayers KNOW deep down there is NO BETTER place on EARTH to live, dream, and raise hell than in these UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
Warts and all, (and boy, do we have some warts) AMERICA IS INSANELY AWESOME.
We are a nation of extreme contradictions. We invented the IPHONE and MARS ROVER, yet we still can’t figure out how to fix our potholes, define what a “WOMAN” is, or debate each other without F-BOMBS. We are obsessed with WELLNESS but will happily eat DEEP FRIED BUTTER at the county fair… and we PREACH unity while people gleefully cheered the assassination of a man who had opinions some didn’t like.
We are deeply flawed. We are scarred by our history, exhausted by the culture wars, and always on edge about tomorrow…
BUT
THE GLORY of America isn’t that we are perfect; it’s that we are allowed to be a hot mess. This is a country built on the radical, intoxicating IDEA that you can stand on a soap box or sit behind a microphone and CRITICIZE the people in power without a midnight knock on your door. YOU are free in AMERICA. FREE to worship how you want, FREE to say what you want, live how you want, and be who you want.
We are a massive, beautiful country full of different cultures, ideas and attitudes that somehow works. Even if it doesn’t always feel that way… and actually… if you really stop to think about it, being an AMERICAN means inheriting a project that is permanently under construction. It gives us the right to be brilliant… just as it gives us the right to be completely insane and ignorant.
So, I say… let all the haters predict the END of the U.S.A… cause actually, gang… AMERICA has been falling apart since 1776 and yet here we are. Celebrating her 250th BIRTHDAY.
America is messy, noisy, and wildly frustrating… but as my late father would most certainly say about this nation on her birthday…
“America is a beautiful thing”.
I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. Nah… AMERICA is the place to be.
HAPPY 4TH folks.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL AND GOD BLESS AMERICA
Till next time!

Hi Judy!
I’m so grateful you take the time to read it ! People are busy! I’m busy! 😂 But, I mean what I say….this world sure is wacky and I’m happy I have a place to vent all that’s swirling around my noggin! Be safe this weekend!

Happy Independence Day!!!
I agree with you Jen. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere, but the great 🇺🇸
I’m sure you have seen by now, the soccer teams from other countries, posting or FaceTime live stream, and can’t believe all that America has to offer! I actually didn’t realize it myself, until, I started watching people actually being so grateful at a grocery store, that has a full aisle of several kinds of soda! I saw this time and time again! Then when they went to our bbq’s they couldn’t believe the food that was served! They said, “that’s all mine!” They were flabbergasted, that there was so much, and the bbq meat, was bigger than their heads!
They said “Americans are so polite!” They are helpful! They LOVE OUR COUNTRY!
In the Spirit of our 250th Birthday. I wanted to share, that all or most of the soccer ⚽️ players and families, were so appreciative of the American 🇺🇸 people!! We are a great country! And we should be celebrating, our freedom, and thanking the men/women who gave us our freedom! And the men/women who gave us their lives for our freedoms!
God Bless America 🇺🇸 Happy 250 🇺🇸
Excellent column— happy 4th of July to you!
Have a wonderful holiday and don’t eat too much cake!!!
