Ron & Jen’s Great Escape, January 10, 2024 – Ron St. Pierre and Jen Brien

by Ron St. Pierre and Jen Brien, commentary

LIGHTEN UP, TAYLOR

Can someone tell me why the hell TAYLOR SWIFT got all bent about a harmless joke at the GOLDEN GLOBES the other night? Some comedian no one knows hosted and basically said she’s OVER EXPOSED. News agencies went bananas saying her icy stare could kill people. Wait, WHAT? WHAT IS HAPPENING?

Was it a joke about her face saying she was ugly? HER Body?

Sexual orientation? Sex life with KELCE?

No.

It was a harmless joke about how America sees her face EVERYWHERE… LIKE EVERYWHERE.

How is this offensive? I swear to you, this generation is borderline mentally ill. It makes zero sense. It was a joke. A silly joke which is what happens at the beginning of each show, so all attendees pretty much know they’re a potential target.

If I were a college professor I’d have “BLAZING SADDLES” on the syllabus just to see the student meltdowns. What happened to these people?

HONESTLY.  I weep for the future.

Till next week my friends…

Jen

P.S. Will someone please tell the DOT to stop slapping themselves on the back about what a GREAT JOB THEY’RE DOING on the Washington Bridge… it’s a s#!t show out there… a total S#*! SHOW…

AND THE OSCAR GOES TO… WHO CARES!

The 2024 awards show season kicked off with the Golden Globes this week with a resounding thud. Although NBC says the audience was up 50% from last season, the entertainment value sure didn’t climb the scale. Host Jo Koy’s (together now, who?) opening monologue hit with the flourish of a stale fart in a submarine, causing the audience of  “the beautiful people” to moan and audition grim facial reactions to the national viewing audience. Koy, whose real name is Joseph Glenn Herbert (but I guess going with a more ethnic version helps him get more gigs), wasn’t the Globe’s top choice to host… in fact he signed his contract 10-days before the event, as at least six A-list comedians said “no thanks” to the gig. Koy’s open monologue included this joke – “The difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL is tonight’s show will have fewer shots of Taylor Swift.”… Come on, that’s a good line… but it was met with moans, a frown by Swift in attendance and then a negative blitzkrieg on social media. Here’s the deal… for the “beautiful people” in the audience to accept being dissed, it has to come from one of “their own”, and Koy ain’t at that level, not even close. Ricky Gervais could have gotten away with it, as could Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, but not some sloppy second. Jimmy Kimmel will host the Oscars for the 4th consecutive year on March 10th. Maybe he’s built up enough “credibility” with the beautiful people to poke fun at them for entertainment’s sake. We’ll see.

ONE IT WONDERS

There have been plenty in the music charting industry but how many have come from the world of TV actors? Well, we may have lost the biggest of all time this week when David Soul of Starsky and Hutch went to the great proscenium arch in the sky at age 80. His 1976 hit DON’T GIVE UP ON US, BABY hit number one on Billboard’s Hot 100. Honorable mention to Vicki Lawrence of the Carol Burnett Show for 1972’s THAT’S THE NIGHT THAT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT IN GEORGIA, John Travolta’s 1976 tune LET HER IN when he was Vinny Barbariono on Welcome Back Cotter (long before teaming with Olivia Newton John and Grease) and David Naughton’s 1979 disco ditty MAKIN’ IT which was the theme of his short lived (thank God) 9 weeks series of the same name on ABC.
