VA Math is Not Traditional Math for VA Disability Compensation

When 70 + 20 = 80 does not add up to 90, and is equal to 70 +20+20+80 for VA Disability Rating.

Question from one of our readers: How does a new rating of 20% not increase my monthly VA disability compensation. Previous, I was receiving 80% VA disability compensation for 70% rating for PTSD , plus 20% rating for knees. I am confused, after the new 20% rating, I was told by the VA the new combined rating would remain at the original 80%. Although 70 plus 20 plus 20 equals 110? Ron, Pawtucket

Answer: VA Math is not your traditional math for figuring your combined disability for compensation. Although traditional math all your rating adds up to 110, your total combined rating for VA disability compensation is 80%.

Welcome to VA Math!

VA Math has Ron from Pawtucket receiving 80% VA disability compensation, even after the additional 20% rating. VA math combines disabilities for multiple conditions into “one combined” rating, since your combined rating did not increase.

How does VA Math Work?

VA Math combines disability ratings for multiple conditions into one “combined” rating. Imagine your body as 100 percent of body parts.

Step 1 – Figuring VA Disability Rating. Each condition is a percentage of your total disability. VA Math combines disability ratings for multiple conditions into one “combined” rating. Each condition is a percentage of your total disability.

Step 1 – Figuring 70% for PTSD and 20% for knees.

Start with the largest rating (PTSD at 70%). Subtract it from 100%. 100% – 70% = 30% remaining.

If you just had 70% rating, you would be getting 70% VA disability compensation.

However, you have other ratings, and next higher is 20% for your knees.

Step 2 – Figuring 70% for PTSD – and 20% for knees. Imagine you started with  your body as full 100 percent. The first rating you knocked off 70 percent of your body, and you have 30 percent left of your body.

Now, you use VA Math

Your second highest rating, which is 20% for your knee, you can only take 20% of the 30% left of your body, which is 6% more of your body rated 70 % from Step 1, plus 6% from step 2, adds up to 76%.

The two rating add up to 76%, which the VA rounds up to 80%

Step 1 and Step 2 is why you were receiving VA compensation at 80%. Note, remaining “body” that can be rated is 24 . A few months later, the VA notifies the veteran he or she is rated an additional 20% for the right shoulder.

Normal math, you would see an increase. NOT in VA Math for the following reason:

Step 3 – Figuring 70% for PTSD, 20% for new and 20% for NEW rating for shoulder

Now have to recalculate, which would include Step 1 and 2, except, rounding up from 76 to 80. The additional new 20% rating is figured:

Recall you already have 76 % of your original 100% of your body left, which leave you only 24% of your body unrated. The new 20% rating is 20% of 24, which add up to 4.8%.

4.8 % (Step 3) plus 76% (Step 1 and 2) adds up to 80.8% (you needed to add up to at least 85.01 to get to 90% combined rating). Although you receive an additional 20% rating, you monthly disability compensation did not increase.

If you receive additional rating, and all other ratings remain the same, you would redo the steps listed above, starting from the highest rating to the lowest.

It may seem confusing, but step-by-step, it hopefully becomes clearer.

VETTIP: – If you google search VA Calculator, numerous sites offer a 2024 VA Disability Calculator, which is no more than typing in your ratings, and clearly, a lot easier than doing it manually.

UPDATES 102 TSGT Caster Salemi Birthday Celebrations

Italian American War Veterans of US/Department of RI honored and blessed in sponsoring and celebrating WWII TSGT Caster Salemi’s 102 birthday celebrations at ROMA, Providence on Friday, and Perella’s Ristorante on Saturday.

A final 102 birthday celebration for TSGT Caster Salemi was held at VFW Post 5392, Tiverton RI. Over 90 veterans and their guest attended the monthly luncheon and wished Caster a Happy Birthday.

Italian American War Veterans of US (ITAM) Volunteer Opportunities:

Leave No Veteran Alone Program – Monday and Saturday, ITAM seeks volunteers to meet up at designated nursing homes to meet and socialize with veterans living at the facility. RI Boots to Bushels – Summer Workshop Series

Boots to Bushels Summer Workshop Series started on May 15th and will run until September 25, 2024, Wednesdays, 9:00 AM-11:00 AM. Calling all beginning farmers, military veterans, and those interested in pursuing a career in agriculture. Join us for hands-on learning at the URI Agronomy Farm this summer. Providence Children’s Museum offers free admission to active military families

Providence Children’s Museum (PCM) participates in the Blue Star Museums program this summer. The national initiative, a collaboration between the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and the Department of Defense, provides free admission to all currently serving U.S. military personnel and their families from Armed Forces Day, through Labor Day, Monday, September 2, 2024.

The free admission program is available for those currently serving in the United States Military—Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, and Space Force, members of the Reserves, National Guard, U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and up to five family members. Qualified members must show a Geneva Convention common access card (CAC), DD Form 1173 ID card (dependent ID), DD Form 1173-1 ID card or the Next Generation Uniformed Services (Real) ID card for entrance into a participating Blue Star Museum.

Providence Children’s Museum serves children and adults of all backgrounds and from all communities. Its focus is on children, ages 1 to 11, and the adults who care for them by presenting hands-on, play-based exhibits and programs that explore arts, culture and science, technology, engineering, and math.

Veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness—and their family members, friends, and supporters—can make the call to or chat online with the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans, where trained counselors are ready to talk confidentially 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Free Golf,  Goddard Park Golf Course Fee Exemption for Totally Disabled Veterans: 

Rhode Island resident Veterans who have a 100% permanent and total, service-connected disability rating from the VA are exempt from paying any fees to play golf at the Goddard Park Golf Course. For more information call the Clubhouse at Goddard Memorial State Park from April 1st through the 3rd Saturday in November at 401-884-9834 or year-round at Division Headquarters at 401-667-6200.

Free Rhode Island Hunting and Fishing Licenses for 100% Disabled Veterans: A Veteran who has a 100% disability rating from the VA is eligible for free Rhode Island hunting and fishing licenses.

No cost licenses are available if you are:

To apply in person at DEM, please bring a photo ID and an ORIGINAL DOCUMENT OF THE FINAL DECISION(S). Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. (directions)

To apply by mail, please complete an application and mail the application and a copy of your photo ID and the ORIGINAL DOCUMENT OF THE FINAL DECISION(S). Please allow two weeks for processing.

Free Rhode Island State Park Passes for 100% Disabled Veterans: Rhode Island offers the State Park Disability Pass for use at any state-owned recreational facility to disabled Veterans who have a 100% service-connected disability rating from the VA.

The State Park Disability Pass authorizes free admission and parking but does not exempt the following:

If the disabled Veteran cannot drive, the vehicle transporting the Veteran will not be charged.

Veterans must apply in person at the Rhode Island State Parks and Recreation Headquarters and are required to show official documentation (dated within the past year) from the VA that states they have a 100% service-connected disability.
