Ready for the First Nor’easter? AAA Northeast’s Essential Tips for Weathering the Storm

For homeowners, drivers and travelers, preparation is key
Tips for Homeowners from AAA Northeast’s Insurance Team
  • Secure loose outdoor furniture. Most local homeowners are likely still enjoying their outdoor furniture at this time of year. Ahead of the storm, move items inside if possible and secure what must remain outside.
  • Trim trees and remove loose branches. Tree damage is a major concern when high winds are in the forecast, and some areas could see gusts over 40 mph. While a standard homeowners insurance policy typically covers structural damage caused by a fallen tree, as well as damage to a home’s contents, poor property maintenance may be considered when claims are reviewed. Seasonal trimming and dead tree removal are crucial preventative measures.
  • Review and replenish emergency supply kits. Take stock of flashlights, batteries and portable chargers in the event your area loses power. Remember to fully charge any rechargeable batteries and electronics before the storm arrives.
  • Look for any issues around windows, doors and vents. Caulk any gaps and cracks to minimize further damage and prevent water intrusion.
  • Understand your insurance policy including what’s covered and what your deductible is, and reach out to your provider with any questions.

Road Safety
  • Follow guidance and safety warnings from local officials. If you don’t have to be on the road during the height of high winds and rain, stay home.
  • Ensure your ride is ready for the weather. Fill your gas tank, test your battery, ensure tires are inflated to your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations and replace worn wiper blades. Always keep an emergency kit inside your vehicle that includes essentials like first-aid supplies, extra phone chargers, high-visibility vests and jumper cables or a battery booster pack.
  • Proceed with caution. AAA Northeast urges drivers who are on the road during the storm to adjust their driving to account for the weather. Reduce your speed and leave plenty of extra room between your vehicle and those around you, as wet roads require longer stopping distances.
  • Slow down and move over. Roadside assistance providers, first responders and maintenance workers will be navigating difficult driving conditions as they work to keep people safe and make needed repairs. Whenever you approach any vehicle at the roadside, slow down and, if safe to do so, move over to give them space.

What Travelers Need to Know
  • Anticipate delays and cancellations due to weather. Flight disruptions are likely, especially in the Northeast. Travelers should download their airline’s app to quickly learn about changes to their flights and rebooking options.
  • Explore alternative plans. Those taking flights to or from airports in impacted areas may find themselves unable to travel as scheduled from parts of the East Coast. Travelers should review rescheduling and cancellation policies and consider backup plans.
AAA Northeast is a not-for-profit auto club with offices in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, New Hampshire and New York, providing more than 6.9 million local AAA members with travel, insurance, financial and auto-related services.
