T. F. Green International Airport (PVD) announces Runway Rehab Progress
The Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC) provided a rehabilitation update, announcing that the most significant aspects of the rehabilitation work on Runway 5–23, the primary 8,700-foot runway has concluded and as of 12:30pm Friday, Oct. 16, the runway has returned to normal operational flight status.
RIAC says when approaching this project, they had to balance three competing considerations: neighbors affected by aircraft overflights because operations shifted to the crosswind runway, neighbors affected by construction noise on the ground, and an obligation to maintain a safe runway for the traveling public.
While flight operations have returned to normal, some residents in close proximity to the new cargo facility may notice ongoing construction activity, and this will continue through the end of the year.
During the next several weeks the runway project will conclude with work being finalized on signage, electrical work and runway striping, which is anticipated to conclude by the end of the year.
Once complete, the new runway is expected to serve the airport until the 2040’s before another reconstruction of this scale is needed or required.
RIAC notes it appreciates the community’s understanding that critical work to maintain safe airfield operations is a top priority.
Concern for the neighborhood really showed when they had construction equipment running until 4am with diesel engines and back up beepers blaring constantly.. so much for sleep.
Lots of that happening – off of Route 37, too – well, it’s done… can’t really do that work during the day (either).
