ART! Providence Art Club new exhibitions open TODAY

The Galleries of the historic Providence Art Club will host celebratory receptions to open three new exhibitions on Sunday, September 18. The galleries will be open from 12-4pm and light refreshments will be served from 2-4pm. Artists will be on hand to discuss their work at this event, which is free and open to the public.

On view in the Maxwell Mays Gallery, paintings and works on paper by Little Compton painter Johanna McKenzie and Newport watercolorist William Heydt will be displayed alongside woodworking by Seekonk, MA artist Phil Gruppuso. McKenzie and Heydt have collaborated frequently on exhibitions at the Club in the past. This show will be their first time exhibition with Gruppuso, who maintains a studio in Seekonk, Massachusetts.

In the Club’s Mary Castelnovo Gallery, visitors will find an exhibition of recent work in glass titled Glass Houses… No Stones by East Greenwich artist Alice Benvie Gebhart. A longtime art educator and Rhode Island College alumna, Gebhart is the owner of Heritage Gifts and Glass Studio in East Greenwich.

In the Dodge House Gallery, a retrospective exhibition focused on the long career of Providence Art Club Life Member Ruth Emers will be on view. An accomplished sculptor, painter, and printmaker, Emers was elected to the Providence Art Club in 1971 and has exhibited regularly at the Club and at numerous other venues.

Of these exhibitions, PAC Gallery Manager Michael Rose says, “We look forward to welcoming visitors to the first group exhibitions of our 2022 – 2023 season, which will highlight works by exhibiting artist members in a number of exciting media.”

About the Providence Art Club:

Founded in 1880 to stimulate the appreciation of art in the community, the Club has long been a place for artists and art patrons to congregate, create, display and circulate works of art.  Located along Thomas Street, in the shadow of the First Baptist Church, the Providence Art Club is a picturesque procession of historic houses, home to studios, galleries and the clubhouse. Through its public programs, its art instruction classes for members and its active exhibition schedule, the Providence Art Club continues a tradition of sponsoring and supporting the visual arts in Providence and throughout Rhode Island.

All exhibitions are free and open to the public.
