Off-season Weekend Round-Up – Jeff Gross
By Jeff Gross, contributing writer
The Amherst Train show is a go! The show will operate regardless of snowfall. Supposedly, Springfield is going to receive 4-7 inches. Basically, a dusting for us New Englanders. So, kick in the 4WD or your AWD, as we will be there! No 4WD to get there on Saturday, then Sunday will be cold and sunny. More, here: www.railroadhobbyshow.com/
The New England Fishing Expo in Boxboro, Massachusetts is a go! The show will be open all 3 days, starting today. There will be a number of Rhode Islanders selling their fishing gear at the show this year. Remember, support local by buying local. https://nefishingexpo.com/
Ice fishing is picking up. Time to dig out that MIA Jiffy Ice Auger. Remember to double check that ice. When snow piles up on the ice it tends to act as an insulation in the sun and melt the ice underneath. I had this happen on Ponaganset Reservoir years ago with only 8 inches of snow and the snow turned the top 3 inches of ice underneath to mush. Fortunately, there was 9 inches of ice. Be safe – Be Aware!
For you late season Canadian Goose hunters, there are tons of geese on the East Bay. This flock pictured of over 110 birds was on the lawn of Portsmouth High School. In the Tiverton area flights of 20 – 30 birds are seen daily going between Stafford and South Watuppa Ponds. Since the late season goes until Feb 12th, 2022, one has a fair amount of time to goose hunt. There are 4 fields in 8 Rod Farm that see a lot of goose activity. Good luck and remember you are doing the folks in Maine a favor by taking geese. Mainers don’t want the damned things on their lakes.
See you next week.
