Nurses Transforming Healthcare completes mission, advances work with Primary Care for All Americans

After five years of educating, advocating, and piloting a new vision for healthcare, Nurses Transforming Healthcare (NTH) has reached an important milestone: the organization has successfully fulfilled the purpose for which it was created. NTH was established to advance a vision of healthcare that recognizes healthcare as an essential service rather than a profit center, while elevating the importance of strong, community-based primary care. Today, many of the ideas NTH has worked to advance are gaining broader recognition and support.

“We recognized that Nurses Transforming Healthcare has successfully fulfilled the purpose for which it was created,” said Ann Scanlon McGinity, executive leader of Nurses Transforming Healthcare. “We are incredibly proud of what we have accomplished over these five years and believe the next chapter is best served by partnering with an established organization that has the infrastructure and capacity to carry this work forward on a larger scale.”

NTH has chosen to continue its work through a partnership with Primary Care for All Americans (PC4AA), a volunteer-driven national grassroots movement that has championed primary care and is advocating for primary care as a public utility.

“We are deeply grateful to Kathleen and the members and Board of Nurses Transforming Healthcare for advancing the cause of healthcare as an essential service, not a profit line, and of primary care as a public utility,” said Michael Fine, MD, founder of Primary Care for All Americans. “Your work has been inspirational and itself essential.”

Fine added that the next challenge is to expand the movement’s local and state presence. “Our next challenge is to build many more local and state workgroups, joining those in California, New York, Virginia, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut,” Fine said. “So step up Texas, Vermont, Utah, Montana, Washington, Hawaii, Georgia and North Dakota. We need everyone! Find a friend or colleague and get started. We’ll help!”

A Legacy of Five Years of Impact

Nurses Transforming Healthcare’s work over the past five years has been made possible through the leadership and dedication of its Board of Directors — Sarah Monson, Emily Spenski, Kimberley Evans, and Jennifer G. Beech, Ph.D. — and the executive leadership of Ann Scanlon McGinity.

The organization is particularly proud of several recent milestones that demonstrate the growing momentum behind the ideas it has championed:

• ●  John Silver, Ph.D., RN, published Public (f)Utility this summer through Cambridge Scholars Publishing, further advancing the conversation around primary care as a public utility.
• ●  By Design: Aligning Values with Structure to Impact Outcomes was published in the International Journal of Health and shared with the national CMMI team.
• ●  The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) recently published an article advancing the concept of primary care as a public utility, reflecting growing recognition of an idea NTH has long supported.
• ●  Kathleen Bartholomew and Jennifer Beech have been active leaders in the Healthcare Reinvention Collaborative, connecting with physicians, public health professionals, and policymakers working to transform healthcare systems.
• ●  Results from the Spicewood Pilot have been shared with senior public health officials in Texas as a promising example of community-based innovation.
• ●  NTH supported several nurse-led initiatives, most recently The Joy of Living, led by Ana Paula Mendez, which brings connection, purpose, and joy to older adults.“These accomplishments reflect the dedication of our board, our leadership, our partners, and the many people who contributed their ideas, time, and expertise to this work,” said McGinity. “We are proud to see these ideas continue to gain momentum and excited that they will have an opportunity to reach an even broader audience through Primary Care for All Americans.”

  As NTH completes the mission for which it was created, its work will continue through PC4AA and the growing network of local and state workgroups working to make primary care available in every neighborhood and community.
